When I updated to OS X Lion I started having this problem. Just say I have 3 unread messages, mail will say I have 6 :| It just counts every e-mail as two e-mails for some reason.

Is anyone else having this problem? It's odd.

It reflects the correct amount of unread messages for me.

See, I have 2 unread messages but it's saying I have 4 :|

if you're using gmail, an extra copy may be stored in your gmail/[all mail] folder

It is because it is grouping emails into conversations. Click the message and you will see. (I hate this feature since it can't be turned off).
For his particular screenshot it's not threaded. There is no little # and triangle indicating it as such. FWIW, I love that feature.

It's specifically showing it in his inbox though. My All Mail doesn't show up under that.

OP, I don't think you're crazy. Strange bug though. Have you tried quitting while discarding windows (Cmd+Option+Q)? Have you tried rebooting?

There is an option to have the unread dock count show only unread emails in the inbox which i think is on by default.

Could also be a email with a label from gmail as that gets downloaded twice, once in the inbox and once in the label folder IIRC (or something along those lines)
