Hi there,

i use the OS mail app with my gmail mail account. Of course it is in IMAP mode and so far it has been working okay. But this week i noticed, that the mail app saves tons of draft mails in the trash while im typing the email! So when i type a longer mail over 10 minutes or so i end up with 40 mails in the thrash, each getting a little longer as i type!! Strange thing is that it puts them in the trash, not in the draft folder..

Has anyone encountered the same problem?! I tried switching off the box "save drafts on server" in account settings but it comes on all by itself after i navigate there again!

Please can anyone help? I couldn't find the same issue using the "search forums". I would be glad if anyone had a link or clue how to get gmail working with the OS mail app!!

Best regards

Dowjohnny

Today i tested removing the account from the mail app and reconfiguring it as suggested on some websites but it didn't help :(

Any ideas?

I personally don't use Mail with Gmail since upgrading to Mavericks with all the issues that have occurred. I know it's not a solution but you may just need to wait for another update to continue to resolve the Mail issues. In the meantime you could always go with Airmail, Airplane, etc.

First of all thanks for your reply!

So you think this is nothing that can be sorted out by some adjustments in the settings? I was under the impression that the problem occurred since the last Mavericks update, so somehow it's getting worse.. And i don't think the next update is to be expected soon?

I tried using airmail but somehow i just don't like the overall appearance and usability.. Also i have a ton of mails in the mail app that i would need to migrate etc..

But if there is no real fix i guess i'll have to use them both..

Interestingly i can't find too much about this issue on the web

I had not noticed that before but I see what you are saying. I too am seeing drafts of the message in the trash box.

Do you see any kind of deletion of these mails after a time or do they stay "for ever"? I wouldn't mind if there were some drafts in the trash that deleted themselves after the next refresh but they don't.

I think were it really gets to a problem is when you have larger files attached to your mail and there are 20 versions of it in the trash

In my Mail settings for the Gmail account under Mailbox Behaviors I just set the Trash to Permanently erase after one day.

I have several in there now so I will let you know in a couple of days.

Since they are being stored in the Gmail trash I think Gmail will auto delete them after 30 days anyway.

Well i considered doing so as well, but i rather frequently need something out of a mail that i deleted in the first place, so that this isn't an option.. I mean the trash is not supposed to work like that..

The whole problem annoys me, i wouldn't care about some drafts in a mailbox but it's just a shame that this does not work as perfectly as many other things in OS do

(sorry about my poor english)

Thunderbird does this as well. I think it just has something to do with how IMAP works. The program auto saves at a set time interval. However, the only reasonable explanation is that it is unable to edit something stored in an IMAP folder, since they reside on a server, so it deletes the old copy and saves the new version instead.

Apparently at least Mozilla and Apple have their programs move the old version to the trash rather than deleting permanently. Which is likely a design choice to prevent the program from deleting something important. It doesn't do this with POP since the program manages the folders directly not through a server.

It might be possible to change this behavior in Thunderbird by editing the appropriate entries in about:config. Apple has no such tool for Mail.

I think the whole problem could be solved if the mail app would save my setting under "mailbox behavior". When i deselect the box "save drafts on server" it automatically comes on after some seconds. Thats the problem.

Even if you delete messages and remove them from the Trash folder they will still be in the All Mail folder on the Gmail web side.

With so much space from Google it is not much of a problem for me.

I will agree that it was almost perfect under Mountain Lion but I can work with it under Mavericks.

Who knows, maybe a future update will correct it.

gmail IMAP accounts leave multiple draft "carcasses" in mail.app Trash

This behaviour is a problem for me too. It applies to the gmail accounts that are IMAP and not the ones that are POP. I'm not sure what determines which is used for which account! (I use a bunch of gmail accounts for various volunteer positions, but they all come together in my mail.app.) Having all those trash emails showing up in my smart mailboxes is unacceptable.

Strangely, I do have the "include messages from Trash" box UNchecked. And if I select and delete the messages that are listed as filed in Mailbox "Trash," they DO then properly disappear. It's like there's a mailbox named "Trash" that is not behaving as the "real" Trash.

Oh, and this is not a Mavericks specific problem. I am still using 10.8, and it has been happening in my mail for a long time.
