Problem with mini dvi to hdmi split screen display.

I have an Imac and I am running a mini dvi to hdmi converter with an hdmi cable running to my tv. I want to be able to have my tv display exactly what my monitor is displaying. As of right now it is working as just an extension of the screen or a boarderless setting. How do I get my tv to show what is on my computer monitor and not just be an extension of the monitor?
