you'll need to change the Mac's workgroup with /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access. Authenticate, click on SMB, then click the Configure button. Change the workgroup to whatever you need. After that, you should be able to see your windows shares in the Finder under Network.

I have tried this and no results either. I find networking in panther to be a real retrograde step compared to Jaguar.

I had absolutely no probs getting windows and mac networking up on Jaguar and my Jaguar emac on my network still sees the PeeCee absolutely every time. Apple needs to sort this out NOW!

BTW my local apple reseller says heaps of its customers are spewing about this issue and apparently it is not a consistent fault - some machines have the problem - others don't.

I have no problems at all connecting two Macs running Jaguar and Panther with two PC's running WindowsXP Pro on my network.
Works very well here.

I'm not sure exactly what I did to get it working; I think it was a file permissions setting in WinXP.
Also, I always have to disable WinXP firewall in order to connect with OSX.

My PeeCee is a Win98 box - networking at that end is rubbish but it still always showed up in jaguar (still does actually) but not at all on Panther.

The last thing I want to do is spend $500 (NZ) on XP upgrades!

panther 10.3.2!

Praise be, I installed the 10.3.2 update and magically my networking troubles seem to be over.

about time, apple.

i was having network problems too (mac 2 win), but I changed my workgroup to the WIN network and everything is fine again...

some server partitions wouldn't let me have access after using them a few times...it would show a folder instead of the aliased network icon, but now all is good. thanx for the heads-up on the Direct Access utility. :)

peace.

Panther networking problem fixed after talking to Apple Support

My network was fine until I installed Panther. After the install Connect to Server didn't list servers and my PCs couldn't see my Macs. The Panther update didn't help. I checked my sharing settings in system preferences and found the install had turned off windows sharing. I reactivated it and now the PCs can find the Macs.

Connect to server still didn't show a list of servers, so I called Apple Support. I was told by the tech Connect to Server doesn't work the same way in Panther and I should be using the Network icon in the Finder to see all the servers available. I, of course, tried this while on the phone and got an error message for each PC alias. Then the not so happy tech had me verify my network and sharing settings. The Network icons still didn't work. I then used Connect to Server to type in an IP address for one of my PCs. It worked and the Network PC icons in Finder started working. The techs response was, "Well, it's just one of those things."

I repeated the same process on my Powerbook with the same results.

yeah, if you loose the the PCs on the Network you can renew your DCHP lease... or do a restart.

peace.

That's the truth dude. My old XP machine had more trouble communicating with its own hardware, let along other computers. It's pretty sad when your mouse need drivers. lol.

This is exactly what happens with me - 10.3.2 has made it a little better but it can only be described as 'flaky' at best!

what gets me is how inconsistent it is - different workgroups appear and disappear all the time - you click on a PC that is in finder and it just disappears - then sometimes it works fine! - it is still so much worse than Jaguar was - and seems to be something to do with moving the available servers from 'go/connect to server' to the network panel in finder.

I hope they sort it as it was embarrassing the other day when I was showing my family how wonderful Macs were with PC networking (I am trying to get them to switch) and the XP machine could see me but not vice versa!!
