I purchased my Mac book pro about 3 months ago.My mac prompted today that new software updates are available.I clicked on install. It prompted me to restart the computer. When I clicked on restart,i got a window saying installing updates. The window stuck at "configuring install" for hours.I finally performed hard-power-reboot.I have no idea why this happened.Would appreciate any assistance.

That is a tad strange. I would suggest doing a permissions repair on the drive using Disk Utility. After that has completed, reboot, reset PRAM (search for how to do this on this forum) then run software updates again.

best of luck.

when having issues with software updates try as follows

delete everything in /Library/Updates and try again; if the issue persists; hard reboot and delete everything in this folder again. then proceed to manually download and install said updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/

found the support article i was talking about http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2383
dont follow the previous post... no reason for permissions repair or pram reset

indeed. I completely forgot about that fix (which I have followed in the past!). Don't follow my previous post. I stand corrected.
