I have a friends macbook. It's circa 2004 according to her. The display look horrible. It looks equivalent to like 8bit windows YUCK. I'm not sure the problem, but it's hard to diagnose (I'm a noob anyway), when I can't see anything!!

could someone point me in the right direction. I tried searching but it's hard to find anything because I don't know how one might describe this problem correctly.

The contrast is probably just turned up really high. Quickest way to change that is to hold down Command, Option, and Control (all three keys immediately to the left of the space bar) and repeatedly press the “," button. You have to press it repeatedly because unfortunately it doesn’t support automatic key repeats, so you can’t just hold it down. It’s only about 10 steps in total though, and you’ll see it changing as you go.
