ok, i transferred some mp3 audio files from another computer onto my mac. when i import them into itunes and play them, the strangest thing happens. ex, if the length of the track is 1:18:34 as displayed on itunes, when i play it, it continues playing way past this time.. (like until 1:48:00)
when i play from the beginning and let it run, the entire track plays, though exceeding the time shown. but when i skip to the beginning or middle of the track with the cursor, they do not play from consistent points.

i hope this makes sense. any insight is much appreciated! thanks!!!

Does this happen on mp3's that are not over an hour long? You said that the songs (or files) are playing for a length of ex. 1:18:34 ? That is one hour and eighteen minutes long. I don't think I've ever used a file that large in iTunes. The possibility of the file to be corrupt is higher at that length of time, than if the file was 4 minutes long.
