Problem with transitions

I am trying to edit a model show but anytime i make a cut and add a transition it seems to add some weird noise during that transition. The video clip has background music with a MC announcing the models. Sometimes the transition adds a static noise or what seems to be the MC's voice into the transition when the area of the cut should not have any sort of sound like that.

Whats going on?

iMovie HD is horrendous for editing audio. Go to Advanced -> Extract Audio for each clip (highlight the clips first), turn waveforms and volume levels on in the View menu, and try to dissolve your audio tracks.

Second thoughts, give up! It can take forever to get audio sounding good in iMovie HD, and even then it sounds like balls at every edit.
