I suspect the display doesn't have adequate power to drive the mouse.

FrancoisC macrumors 6502a Oct 10, 2013 #4 The USB ports on my thunderbolt display would just quit working sometimes, only way to fix it was tu unplug and replug the thunderbolt connection :/ My mouse would stop working just like you :/
