I recently thought my iPod had died. Got a zapping noise when I did a forced restart, tried restoring it a couple times, nothing worked. It's going on 3 years old, and I've changed the battery in the meantime, so I thought that's it!

But, while trying to diagnose this problem, I came across a suggestion, mentioned practically in passing, in another "my ipod died" thread. They said "put it in the freezer"! So I figured, why not?! What have I got to lose?

I put it in the freezer, kind of forgot about it overnight, then remembered it, plugged it into sync via the USB cable, and walked away, expecting nothing. Came back a little while later, and it was almost done syncing! (It had previously stopped syncing and froze up after just a few songs.) I've been using it now for a week, have re-synced a few times, and it still works!

Now hopefully my Mini can hang on until they come out with a 16mb Nano! :D

(although it was only a temporary fix for this user, four months is better than zero months!)

(note on this last comment: I did nothing like separate the HD or put anything in a static bag or ziploc. I literally just threw the sucker into the freezer.)

Pretty cool, like you said, if you have nothing to loose.

And also, I think that they're far past the 16MB nano ;)

Another solution for an iPod hard drive that is giving problems is to smack it really hard on the back.

I know, it sounds crazy, but it actually works.

I have done this with a few of my friends' iPods that stopped working and it brought them back to life with this method.

In fact, I have actually seen Apple Geniuses do it at the Apple Store.

    No joke!
