I am having problems with my imac 24. I have trouble running two applications at the same time. I also can't shutdown because OSX refuses to close programs even when I force quit.

I am frustrated and would like to wipe this thing clean and start over. I would like to keep my settings and itunes songs and other media.

What should I do to "get ready to wipe". I have had time machine running about 10 days but have had this problem much longer than that. So I don't want to restore crap if it is indeed crap.

Any advice from you guys would be nice

Instead of reinstalling, why not find a program like AppCleaner and use it to uninstall these two programs you're having trouble with? Simply restart your computer (or do a hard shut down if necessary) and only open up AppCleaner upon startup. Select the problematic programs and delete 'em.
