Problems updating from 10.8.5

Hi guys, i'm having trouble updating my macbook pro, it doesn't help that i'm a noob when it comes to Apple products. I keep getting a notification saying 'Your computer will restart to complete these updates'', but when i click restart my macbook just shuts down. When I try and do a software update I get a crash report. Same happens when I try and open safari or the app store.. Any ideas on whats happening? If you need any additional info let me know and i'll try and find it! :s
