Sometimes when I want to use Apple Pay on my 15 Pro and I activate it, it says “Hold near reader” but that’s it. The transaction won’t start. When I restart the phone it works again. Most of the time, Apple Pay works just fine but one out 20 this happens. Anybody else experiencing this? Sounds like software since it works most of the time … or?

I’ve never had the problem where I need to restart the phone, but I have had it where the reader did not detect Apple Pay. With me that just means I have to double click side button again to bring up the cards again.

I think most people put their phone near the reader and then wait for Apple Pay to activate. I double click the side button because I usually want to choose which card I want first before I put it near the reader. Maybe this has some effect but I don’t know.

Having to restart the phone to get it to work would be extremely frustrating for all involved!

So you think it’s hard or software?

Update:I always activate Apple Pay by double clicking and never wait ‘til it starts on its own. But if it is a hardware problem, why is it working most of the time?

My guess would be software, but that’s only a guess. What I would do is completely restore the phone to factory and then set it up without restoring from backup, which could bring back the issue. I know that sounds extreme but I use Apple Pay frequently and depend on it, so having to randomly restart my iPhone would drive me insane. Perhaps if you don’t use Apple Pay that often, this may not be a good solution.

Being intermittent does make me think it’s a software problem, but I don’t know enough about how the circuitry works to say that with confidence. I’m sure there’s someone on here that knows a lot more than me about this.

It sounds like software … if it were a hardware issue why would it work most of the time?

It's possible it's the reader itself. At one of the gas stations near me, they have tap to pay card readers at the pumps. Because of that, the pumps take Apple Pay. But there is one pump that I avoid because the reader never works and has yet to be fixed. I can stand there with my debit card and tap until the world ends, but it won't accept it.

Some readers just break and don't get fixed.

Possible. Just got back from getting a Pizza. Worked only on the 2nd try. But if there would be trouble with my NFC antenna or the Secure Enclave of my chip, why is it working almost most of the time?

What I meant was the POS device, not your phone. These devices seem to break down a lot.

Update: Just checked my NFC by using an app like IDMe which reads the NFC info from passports and it works just fine. So NFC seems to be ok.

For the same transaction on the same POS (store)?
I think this would be important to establish if the problem is on your phone or on the POS.

One other thing to keep in mind is that if I prepare my watch for payment (double click) too early and have to wait too long for the payment, it just will not work.
I don’t know if it is the same with the phone.

Yep. On the same POS terminal. But as I mentioned earlier: NFC seems to be alright since I can use other Apps that rely on NFC.

Same here. My 13PM works no bother with Apple Pay. Only 1 card in wallet so double tap, boom, done
Perhaps it's just my iPhones?

I always have to double click. Whether it's a home button or a side button. Tapping the button twice with a finger does nothing.

Yeah, I'm being pedantic, because you meant 'click' and 'everyone knows' you meant that. But there IS a difference between clicking and tapping and stuff like that can trip people up. It has in another thread I'm involved in at least.

Maybe I am being a bit short, but when it fails on try #1 I just pull out the card. If I get annoyed enough I switch to cards for a while before I’ll try again.
Apple Pay or Google Pay. I treat ‘em the same.

Do you drive a BMW by any chance? They are having issues with their in car wireless charging pad as it can disable / damage the NFC chip. If you charge wirelessly somewhere, it could be worth moving to cable charging for a period of time and see if the problem persists. This isn’t to solve the issue, just troubleshoot where it might be coming from.

No Beamer here, just an Audi….😁

ApplePay work perfectly for me with the double click on the home button. Buying gas is another issue. The only way I can but gas at Amoco is through their app. It works well but you have to use their app.

Do you have another contactless card nearby, maybe in the phone case? Because the machine can get confused about which one to charge

I think this sometimes happens to me when i hold the phone to the reader with the same hand as my apple watch

I don't see how that could be the case as the watch only responds if the side button is pressed twice.

I recently had kind of the opposite problem, did the usual 2 clicks, and the reader dinged but did not register the payment. Did it a second time and it did work. I only got charged once.
