hi Folks,

purchased this 2009 Macbook Pro from a friend a while back. Most things work ok, but trying to install new applications or upgrade old ones, almost all seem to crash. I finally tracked down some older versions of Chrome and Skype; they work ok.

Now I'm wanting to try out some of the Adobe cloud apps, and I just downloaded the Adobe Installer app, and it crashed too. Each crash is followed by one of those reports with all the techie mumbo jumbo in it.

I've logged on as a different user, and the suspect apps still crash. I've repaired all file permissions from safe boot. No change. I've also run MEM TEST, a utility for checking RAM, from the command-line bootup and it was clean.

The only success I've had, regarding a newly purchased version of Aperture, was to re-install the Lion OS, and then Aperture "took", but I can't go re-installing the entire OS every time a new app or upgrade crashes.

My only solution seems to be to revert back to a 10.6 operating system. I'm currently running 10.7.5 on a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of ram.

Thanks for any suggestions ... !

... which are useful in determining the cause of the crash.

Can you paste one into a text document, save it, and then upload it here as an attachment?

Code:
/Library/InputManagers/*/Ecamm Plugin Loader.bundle/
Delete this. And anything else in your /Library/InputManagers folder.

Input Managers were designed as a method to allow third-party software to manipulate user input, but they got used as major ways of changing all sorts of OS functions. They tend to get their claws in deep into the OS, and often cause crashes when the OS is updated. They are not to be trusted.

still crashing after "input mgr" stuff removed ...

hi Ben,

thanks for the suggestion. removed the ecamm folder from user/library/input mgr and also removed crash report thing from system/library/input manager; also disabled the "adobe resource manager" from startup items, but the Adobe Installer app still crashes; so I assume that this protocol didn't help things.

still looking about for answers ....

(new crash report attached....)

Did you restart?

There are plenty of other places to look for conflicts

What is the output of terminal when you paste this into it:

kextfind -case-insensitive -not -bundle-id -substring 'com.apple.' -print

Next, what is in the following folders:

/Library/Launchagents
/Library/LaunchDeamons
/Library/StartupItems

Also look for these in your home Folder.

Not much to see here, the Extensions seem to be OK, you have several Printer Extensions which I don't have, I don't get it why HP has to install so many though, if I did not have an HP product I would delete them all.
The only other extension which I got but moved out is the RoxioBlueRaySupport.

As for the Lauch... and startup, there are quite a few but they are all legit.

BUT, I do see something which I had a problem too after I used Migration Assistant and I will never use it again.

You have three files there in LaunchDeamons called:

.SM.gui.com.adobe.fpsaud.plist
.SM.gui.com.google.keystone.daemon.plist
.SM.gui.com.microsoft.office.licensing.helper.plist

You can delete this and I have a suggestion for you, download EasyFind from:

http://www.devontechnologies.com/products/freeware.html

Then open the App, do a search on your HD with this .SM.gui.com
You also have to check the invisible files box amongst the package box.
Then delete all the files starting with .SM.gui.com
Some of the files can not be deleted without root access, you can bypass this by right clicking and then open containing folder, then select the files and delete them, you have to enter a password.
You could do this in Root User but is more complicated, I attached a screen below to show how to.

Now, it has not been mentioned but you could also try resetting SMC, it sometimes does help:

Resetting the System Management Controller - Support - Apple

Oh, and some of my CS 4 Apps crash as well, haven't found a way around it without updating.

lion crashes on apps starting ...

hi JP

thanks for your efforts, once again.
i have no printer tied to this computer; all leftover HP & printer stuff is from its previous owner, so I'll simply delete them.

the devon technologies apps look great; am trying to use the Easyfind App, searching for SM.gui.com; it's finding MANY files (attached screen-shots). Are you sure it's ok to delete all these?

If you give the go-ahead I will give it one last try ... getting to feel like wiping the hard drive and installing a 10.6 OS is the only reasonable choice here.

cheers!

Yes, they are all OK to delete.
Didn't you get more results, are you sure you searched with invisible files on and inside App bundles?
I had many more.

This won't likely solve the problems, these are leftovers from Migration Assistant.

osx crashing when new apps boot up

well, I've painstakingly located all the .SM.GUL* files, even the hidden ones and trashed them all. Re-started the computer, and Adobe Application Mgr still crashes (even tried re-installing it). reset the SMC, still no change.

i've run out of options it seems.

latest crash report attached.

My Mac has been crashing multiple times a day for a couple months. Nothing seems to fix it. I've tried using different browsers, etc., and it doesn't seem to matter what apps are open.

apps crashing in "Lion"

yeah. looks like "Lion" is a bit of a "Lemon".

I either go forward to "Mountain Lemon" or go backward to "Snow Lemon".

"Snow Lemon" sounds tastier for some reason.

sometimes 'backward' is a better choice.
