problems with facetime between verizon and at&t?

I have been trying to do facetime with my gf who has a verizon iphone... I have att... We did successfully at my house using the same wireless network, but it doesnt work when we try it from separate homes... any ideas??

There's no point mentioning the carriers because FaceTime doesn't work through cellular data.

Which Wi-Fi did it originally work on? Yours or hers?
