problems with playing movies through macbook onto TV

hi

I have just gone out and brought a video cable HDMI -DVI lead and an apple mini - DP to DVI adpater..

everything is hooked up and I can get the desktop of my macbook onto the TV but nothing else shows up... no folders or anything. When it comes to playing a movie on my macbook the tv turns black as if it is trying to do something but nothing happens..

just wondering if anyone can help me out on this..

I have the new 13.3 inch al macbook and my tv is pretty new..

Are you in Front Row? Or are you trying to play a full screen movie in QT or DVD player?

hook up tv. go to system preferences. go to display. check mirror display.
