I am having problems updated software through "software update". I have tried for weeks to update the quicktime update. My system is: dp 1.8 g5, 512mb. I was able to update itunes a few weeks back but since then I can't get quicktime to update or now garageband. I first thought it was just an issue with quicktime but now think that it might be the os. When I update it gets to the window where I put in my password and then it crashes and says that there has been an unexpected error. I have sent the crash report to apple each time. Any help here would be great...

sounds like your system is making a cry for help. at the very least repair permissions and run fsck.

as for quicktime, download the update from apple.com/quicktime/download/

hope you keep regular backups of your important data.
good luck. ;)

That happens on my parents iMac too with quicktime. Remember, all Apple software updates can be downloaded from apple.com. Not just quicktime, but airport, security updates, etc...

My buddy's PowerBook G4 has this exact problem! Software Update gets to the point where it prompts you for the administrator password, then, after typing the correct password and clicking OK, Software Update unexpectedly quits EVERY TIME. The suggestion I got from another thread was to delete the Software Update preferences and caches (located in ~/Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Caches/Software Update), which I haven't tried yet.
