Can anyone help if this is even possible on the iPhone, and where to start please.

*connection to the mpeg4 stream (being streamed continuously over http)
*someway to filter out only the audio
*some way to access the frequency / volume levels

Is NSURLConnection a good approach to access the stream?
Are there any API's for assembling/processing the stream/extracting audio?
any pointers on how to get started would be much appreciated.

Have a look through the Core Audio documentation. I'm not sure if it can do #1 and #2, but #3 should be doable.
