does OS X sort itself out better than XP in that respect?

yes.

Also, my most important thing i'm trying to find out is if everyone thinks the PowerPC powermacs will be better at audio processing than the Intel Macs?

intel macs do not exist at this time, so nobody knows. but if we can learn about history, then buying a latest generation ppc powermac for audio work is GREAT idea. it will take a few software revisions to get the software stabilized no matter what, and jumping to first intel mac revision bandwagon will be very risky.

another thing that annoys me is their proprietary hardware requirements for using the software

...and yet you still choose to use OSX instead of windows  protools is the macintosh of an audio world, period.

yes, really. powerbook has better overall data throughput than imac, and it is the real-world performance that counts when doing audio work. trust me on this one, skip ibook if you only do audio. (unless you want maximum track count with minimum processing, in which case the larger screen of an imac is a HUGE plus).

i would definetely recommend powerbook+002R combination. that rocks. but if you have the money to go for a dual G5 powermac, that's a winner. no question about it.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree.

I use Logic, with various soft synths, effects and use of looping and samples. In a latest powerbook, I can get say, 6 instances of Eastwest Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Edition running effects of their own. With a G5 (same amount of ram) I can get at least ten.

While you can get by on a powerbook no problem (and that is of course the point of this thread) it's frankly better to have a G5 at it. The bus speed I'm presuming makes a hell of a lot of diff, along with higher clock speeds - and not to mention the fact you're going to get a 7200 RPM HDD nativly in your imac.
