I just ordered one and will be picking it up later this evening. I WILL have AppleCare+ on the device.

Should I even think twice about purchasing or using a case? If not, how does the Product Red iPhone 8 or 8 Plus wear with no case?

I really feel like it would be a disservice to cover the back of such a beautiful phone!

Do what you want, but it’s not going to take much abuse. Just add in the cost of the deductible and go without a case if you like. Not sure what happens with Apple care if you crack your phone twice. Another thing to know about Apple care is you will most likely get a refurbished phone as a replacement. I see posts on here where people are annoyed they didn’t get a brand new replacement.

After two replacements I believe that you pay the out of warranty replacement costs; which hurts.

That's what I was thinking - screen replacement or device replacement is not much different than the cost of a case...

I thought that replacement devices from Apple were all factory new?

I haven’t had apple care, but I believe they’re nearly always Apple refurbished. High quality, but some people are strongly opposed to refurbs.

I’ve had mine since 14 April and it still looks great. Cases are off and on daily and there’s no wear or scuffs. I never put my phone in a pocket with keys or on top of anything rough though. I’m generally pretty aware of how I handle it.

Enjoy yours!

The 8 plus is a much nicer experience without a case.

The glass back has a luxurious feel to it.

Also, the phone is quite heavy and a case only makes it worse.

I have an 8 Plus but feel that I have to have a case on it as the naked iPhone, just doesn't offer enough grip - especially when the glass back gets full of fingerprints, it just makes the phone a slippery mess!!

Do not buy a case that would cover the beauty of the gorgeous red glass back. Get Thanotech bumper. With the bumper, your gorgeous red iPhone can still be protected if it is dropped and still have the gorgeous red shown off. With the bumper, you can also love the feeling of naked phone. Wish the best for whatever decision you will make.

That red phone is gorgeous and I would want to see the back of it. I’ve never tried a bumper case, but I’ve gone the clear TPU case route a few times. I take it out of its case from time to time when I’m home at my desk or on the sofa. That’s enough to satisfy my tactile needs.

Another way to look at it - if you own the phone outright, I probably wouldn’t worry about constant protection. If you are on an upgrade program through Apple or your carrier, I’d be more concerned about keeping it looking good.

Also, are you clumsy? Do you drop your phone wherever and however without paying attention to the surface? Do you care? I’ve seen some abused phones that probably need a rescue and a GoFundMe page for all of the damage they’ve experienced. Jokes aside, do what works for you.

I expect the Product red iPhone to be sold until a few more months once the fall keynote is here, then they decide to discontinue it with the announcement of the new models.

Yes, it's slippery.

But using the phone now without a case, I just feel you don't get the tactile experience of the phone when the glass back is covered.

I found the phone just too bulky and heavy with a case.

That’s the downside. That’s also why I wouldn’t do it without AppleCare+.

I can’t suffer the idea of buying the red iPhone and then covering it right up.

With The rising cost of smart phone repairs today, it’s almost better to have Applecare Plus, especially if you don’t use cases. It’s when someone breaks their phone and they realize what it will cost them without insurance to have it repaired.
