I get that but I don't see the big issue whilst there is hardly any content.. Especially how people moan on these forums about it.. if there is hardly any content whats the point. But you could also argue if they making 5k iMacs they could of done 4k Apple TV.

I'm personally not that bothered purely because of the lack content.. They never perfected HD most channels still only have standard def programming..

Thats my main gripe.. get 1080p more widespread!

These are streaming devices though, not cable TV. I cannot remember the last thing I streamed from a box not in at least 1080P

30fps is not watchable. flicker flicker flicker.
Considering most movies are shot at 24fps and most TV is 30fps I fail to see what is flickering in your eyes. We're not talking about video games and computer displays here.

A new ATV may not come out in 2016, but customers being pissed would not be among the reasons for it. If they saw a benefit to releasing an ATV in January they would do it; feelings be damned.

I completely agree. Why get mad if they release new devices frequently. I mean what difference does it make to someone who gets anoyed because they just got atv4 if Apple release a new one every month from now on or annually.

If it's released in 2016, I doubt the next Apple TV will support 4K.
All the factors working against wider 4K adoption today will remain in place in 2016...
  • 4K resolutioosing data caps that would make......
This song makes the most sense to me

Thanks for all the suggestions but I have a simple itunes only video library, unaltered or changed in anyway. Obviously with Apple DRM and all so most of the solutions seem to require me to alter, modify my library not something I am into, or have much background in doing -- left along any software experience. So whatever I do needs to work with Mac, itunes, WIFI, apple TV. Plex and other seem to require I need to be like some of you who modify your videos for personal use, I do not do that nor really want to start down that road.

There's an issue with you Apple TV, your router or your Mac, streaming from my iTunes library to the new Apple TV is as smooth as ever (actually a little more responsive). This is on wifi by the way. Sorry, I know that's not a lot of hope, but if you have a different router, try swapping it out and see if it makes any difference. Eliminate each hardware factor, before giving Apple a call for some advice.

This is very believable. I think that Apple will now have the Apple TV on an annual update cycle (18 months max) now that its OS is based on iOS and the hardware is A* chip based.

I also believe the 5 will be 4K/HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2.

Nothing has changed, Mac Pro 2009 serving via homeshare thru itunes, Airport Exteme -- latest generation. All the same setup with my Apple tv 3 that is running with my new 4 so the only change, the only variable is my new Apple TV 4.

Those of you who keep wondering why ATV4 doesn't have 4K need to take a look at the Amazon reviews for the Roku 4. There are way too many negative reviews. From my reading, they mostly consisted of complete failure, frequent system hangs, and a loud fan with overheating. Most of these seem related to the extra processing overhead that 4K would require.

These are the kinds of engineering issues that I imagine Apple engineers also found and probably decided that they had enough to deal with, with a new OS. I don't think it's as easy to implement 4K as most of you are making it out to be.

It's it a little crazy, based on the past release track record of Apple TVs (which are years and years between releases), that we'd get any new Apple TV in 2016? 2017, maybe; but this seems a bit premature.

Does anyone with the ATv4 think that it needs to be faster???
This is Digitimes. They have the worst record on Apple product news. I'm sure Johnny and team have a better, faster and slimmer model in their labs. No way this new design has made it to the supply chain in China.

4K and other technologies are the manufacturer's way of trying to get people to buy new TV's more than once every 7-10 years. I feel like they will try to sell "features" like 4K... similar to the MHZ myth and photo megapixels. Don't be fooled.

I don't understand the no 4K, no Buy comments.

There is hardly any content available to make use of a 4k TV, they haven't even maximised the potential of 1080P.

From what I can see they only have 18 titles available with 4k.

You'd just be an early adopter paying crazy prices for little reward.

how are you displaying your 4k iphone videos?

its shameful that a company that supposed to make everything just work, puts in features on its phone that its tv display device cannot show. Isnt that the point of buying everything apple? integration?

I own a Roku 4 and the 4K Fire TV. The Roku is a hot little beast, I agree, although I haven't seen the system hangs. My Fire TV seems to be able run 4K content just fine, and by all reports the Nvidea Shield manages just fine as well (it actually seems to get the best reviews, I am considering buying one).

So there is no technical reason Apple couldn't have implemented 4K other than they are never first to market with that stuff. I remember when the ATV was released as only 720p in a sea of 1080p devices. I am sure there was a similar thread here about how your eyes can't tell the difference, etc and 720p is just fine, etc.

Roku is better.
Amazon Fire Stick is better.
Google Chromecast is better.
No 4K, no buy.

Apple TV sucks. Learn to innovate, Apple.

There we go, all further comments are conveniently summed up right here.

What does it matter? No 4K content exists and the stuff that streams is such poor quality, it's no better than decently encoded 1080p content.

  • 4K resolution requires a very large (80"+) screen or very close viewing distance to be appreciated
  • Most people don't own or have the space for an 80"+ TV
  • Mot people don't want to view a 60" TV from 5 feet away
  • Most Americans don't have sufficient bandwidth to stream 4K video at good bitrates w/o terrible compression
  • Major ISPs in the US are imposing data caps that would make streaming 4K video prohibitively expensive for most
  • Very little content is currently available in 4K

While probably well-addressed in the intervening 13 pages, I'll put in my $0.01.

4K screens from 37" up exist and do look better when closer - and yes some people do park themselves right in front of the screen.
Arguments based on size/distance restrictions don't really apply in light of common real-world use.
That 4K streaming is inconvenient and content lacking ignores the chicken-and-egg problem which we likewise saw rapidly overcome with HDTV (yes, I recall exactly the same rhetoric: "you know how crappy 1080p looks streamed over current fast network service? and that there's hardly anything available?").

4K _does_ look better, there _is_ content, there _will_ be vastly more content not long from now, and there _will_ be higher bandwidth available coupled with better compression. Given that the iPhone 6S can capture 4K content, and lots of competitors are offering 4K streaming hardware (available content or not) for prices nearly on par with HD boxes, there's growing pressure for Apple to make 4K happen.

I'd guess the ATV4 is _capable_ of 4K, but is prone to overheating. New heat sink plus new features & processor point to ATV5 earlier next year.

So call Apple for advice or return it for a replacement unit, It's a widely used feature of the Apple TV and this isn't an accepted limitation or widely akncowledged issue - it's specific (in this case) to you - good luck, but this is a fault, not a problem everyone is experiencing.

always good idea to wait for 2nd gen device!!!

yes, I know this is ATV 4- but with a brand new OS, remote etc, this is like a first gen device.

Europe taken together is easily Apple's third or probably second largest market and bandwidths here are plenty high and not capped.

Your second statement makes no sense. You were talking about the content provided to watch 4K TVs. In that respect the amount of 4K TVs sold will push the development of that content. The distance at which people at home look at the pixels is unknown and irrelevant to the content providers.

When looked at your graph, I watch TV right on the purple line and should be able to see the difference, and I do. I have a small TV (48") compared to the Dutch average and live in a standard home. Most people here in Europe have the TV size AND distance to their TV to appreciate 4K.

I thought you said 3.5 meters. The chart is in FEET.

Bogus rumors... Same with 4 inch iphone coming next spring..
All designed to hamper sales....

Oh... and this report is about as reliable as each and every rumor of "a new Apple TV right around the corner" 2-3 years ago.

Has anyone else realized Apple probably won't add 4K support until all their Macs do (that may be now), all their iPads do (pretty sure that's now), and most importantly, content from the iTunes store is in 4K. Watch, this Apple TV will be released along with a "all new, revamped, kisses your a** for you 4K iTunes store," and it's going to "change our lives," and allow us to "see TV in a way that's never been done before," or whatever other phrases they like to use.

AppleTV4 - To Get the ball rolling, and get app developers ramped up and ready.
AppleTV5 - 4K, & Xbox360/PS3 level graphics for games ??? I hope !!

It doesn't need to compete with XBOne/PS4/PC to be awesome in the game/App space, but at PS3/X360 level it would compete very well and be very competitive is a similar way that iPhone's/iPods compete with NintendoDS & PSVita. Also, pair a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and load up Pages/Numbers/Keynote and it would be a pretty sweet little portable machine.
