How about making the profanity filter do something else productive while it's at it...

  • replace 'itouch' (or i-touch or any combination of upper/lower case of it) with 'iPod touch'
  • replace 'MAC' with 'Mac'

How about it?

Hey! I take that personally. Although, I've never done either of those, I just recently switched, and you guys would scare me off if you did that to me!;) I maintain that that is not "stupid," simply, "ignorant." Are we good now?

I'm not trying to be a troll -- I'm just trying to find out if the rules on profanity have changed, or if they're not going to be applied as strictly in the future. It just struck me as odd that Arn would reply to the post and not do anything to mask the profanity in the quote. Maybe that's not under his jurisdiction.

I checked, and I didn't see any moderators replying to that thread as of yet, so it's possible that there hasn't been a moderator on that thread to catch the profanity, nor to pick up my reports. I'll give MR the benefit of the doubt, but I do want to know what the standards are. It's just a personal preference -- that's all.
Give us all a break and go somewhere else if you don't like what you read.

IMO this forum has the strictest profanity rules I have encountered in a long time. Personally I think these rules are childish, stupid and counterproductive, but we have to go with what the majority of the users want.

Normal people like myself who don't care about profanity, and people like you who are (seemingly) obsessed about it are the two extremes and probably should not be catered to.

I think most of us are adults here and can handle inoffensive "profanity."

If it gets to the point of insults or flame wars I'm sure the mods would deal with it accordingly.

I think too much censorship is bad. Let people express themselves the way they want as long as they are not hurting anyone else.

Stop being so overly sensitive and stop reporting people for unreasonable reasons to the mods making them do more work because you have a stick up your buttocks.

Although, it would have been too funny if you reported Arn.

...but you *can* keep it locked in the basement and beaten regularly :D Seriously, how would what I propose be any different than a spellchecker? A very specific, enforced, spellchecker? One that could eliminate the scourge of 'itouch' and 'MAC' forever?

I have to say, given some forums that I'm a member of, that you're simply dead wrong here. Even in private, professional forums where everyone is an educated adult, when profanity is allowed, things get out of hand very quickly. Feelings are hurt, and valuable members of the forum leave.

Allowing profanity here would increase the number of idiots, decrease the number of serious commenters, and make the forum a less valuable resource.

The moderators here do an excellent job keeping conversations civil, which is one reason why these forums are so popular.
