I was encoded tons of FLAC into AIFF since el capitan without problems. It also support encoding to m4a container.

Thanks, but I don't get how to set it to convert to 256 iTunes plus. IT keeps converting to 1000. and I don't want to convert it then In iTunes. Any advice?

Fission (from Rogue Amoeba) does this well, but it’s not free (it does a heap of other stuff as it’s primary focus, I originally bought it to get precise timed clips out of longer source material to make ringtones).
