Program icons added to the dock after closure

This problem is new. After I exit an app, its icon stays in the dock on the right side. I then need to right-click it and manually remove it from the dock. I didn't have to do this before, so I'm guessing I missed a setting somewhere. What did I miss so that program icons are not added to the dock this way? Thanks.

It’s just recents. It looks like this will take care of it.

Turns out the feature can be turned off on iPad, also. A lot less annoying now.
