Program quits unexpectedly

The is the first challenge Ive had with my MacBook. After installing updates yesterday, Safari, Finder and other programs open and then quits unexpectedly. It gives a message like this "The application Safari quits unexpectedly."

What should I do?
 
mankar thats absolutely terrible advice. what if the OP has no idea how to reinstall default OS X apps? and reinstalling should definitely not be the first step. what do you do to repair a car? buy a new one straight away or isolate the problems and fix them? hmm i wonder :rolleyes:

naryen do you have any third party addons installed in safari or the finder? particularly input managers for safari or contextual menu items or quick look bundles for the finder? when are the apps crashing? what tasks are you doing?

open the crash reports logs in home/library/logs and see if you can tell where its crashing and what components are the culprits.
 
If Safari crashes, you can delete (move to Trash) the following Safari-related items, and try to start Safari again:

("~" = your Home directory)

~/Library/Safari/ (drag the "Bookmarks.plist" to your Desktop, so you can move it back again)

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

sorry- i guess i could have been more thorough. but in my experience, things like this usually aren't that simple, and it's easier to back up your files and reset a few programs than going into the logs and diagnosing the root of the problems.
 
I find that programs will crash unexpectedly on a frequent basis. Safari seems to be one of the worst offenders. Safari has been getting worse over the past year even though I have reinstalled software a couple of times. Firefox is a slow and sometimes useless browser which can be frustrating. Camino seems to lock me out of several sites.

Even this site where it asks for the log in to be remembered it doesn't work with any of the browsers. I hate using multiple browsers, I even have to use Netscape sometimes. It is the only way I can access some sites.

For instance, many of the .gov sites are not compatible with Safari. I know my medicare site is not.

richthomas, I have no thrid party addons. Basically im running everything as is the way they were when I got the machine in May 07 except for the updates. The programs safari and system preferences crashed as soon as they are open, once I click they open for a few seconds and then close.

Ive done as you suggested...........still no luck
 
sorry ive got no idea about that crash log i was hoping something would pop out about the problem but its too technical for me.

i wouldnt advise reinstalling OS X apps atm as it seems to be a system issue rather than an app issue. try installing the 10.5.1 updater again which you can find here its a 110mb download
