We are truly sorry to hear it. :)

For the real LA experience, I recommend driving the freeway during rush hour, which for your convenience, runs from 4 AM to midnight.

A slight exaggeration.... :)

There are times that the freeways are just fine. Sure, the to-and-from-work rush hour times are a little extended compared to most other cities, but to imply that the freeways are rammed from 4am to midnight is just not accurate.

For example, here is a screenshot from around 11am (which falls between your 4am to midnight period) from Google Maps. Looks pretty clear to me. I bet I could get to Culver City from Westwood in 5 minutes or to downtown in 15-20 minutes right now.

Only slightly. Anything not green on those maps indicates slow traffic flows. I have been stuck in LA traffic jams literally at midnight, and I don't even live there, so I suspect every Angelino has many times. If you can choose where you want to go, and when, then it's not an issue. How many people can do that?

Recently, it took me over an hour to drive from Santa Monica to Beverly Hills -- at noontime. No accidents, just completely jammed freeways and surface streets. It would have been faster to walk, and that's no exaggeration at all.

Downplaying LA's traffic situation -- that's hardly fair to the unsuspecting visitor. It's truly horrendous.
