Projector on battery power?

Is it possible to hook up an external display or projector while on battery power? Do you have to be plugged in?

a projector or display has its own power source so i don't think you need to be plugged in to hok it up

Note that at least with the Apple Displays, the laptop must be plugged in if you want to use it in clamshell mode.
