Can the iPad be updated, say in iOS 14, to have proper external display support? Currently I am hooked up to a 24" monitor and it's fine, but it'd be much better if iOS could handle bigger displays better.

I ask not just an 'if Apple will develop the feature', but if they do, will current iPad's with lightning be able to support it? I feel the official adapter is doing a lot of the work in the current functionality of screen mirroring? It would also be nice to turn off the iPad screen whilst on an external monitor

Who else wants this feature and how likely is it, do you think?

It would be nice but would likely require significant effort and app changes to support a different aspect ratio.

Do you think the A series chips and the Lightning port interface is up to the task, technically speaking?

Apple has a reason why it won’t offer it. My guess is to protect Apple TV. Because there’s no way Apple TV should just be a Built in App experience with an iPad Pro and better if it would scale iPad OS properly.

But I’ll wait for 2021 and a new iPad Pro I always skip a Generation.

Its gonna take at least 8GB RAM and an A16X CPU at 3.2Ghz to provide a silky smooth 4K HDR experience.

What does cpu speed and ram have to do with 4K HDR? TVs play 4K HDR content with way, way, way less RAM or CPU power.

It's probably limited by the bandwidth of the lightning connector or the USB-C connector. I've seen issues with USB-C adapters on my MacBook Pro that hit bandwidth limits.

Yup. A $40 Roku Premiere does 4K HDR-10 with an ARM Coretex A53 and 1GB of RAM. Surely the SOCs in iPads from the last couple of generation should be up to the task.
