Why does the article say “It likely uses USB 2.0 with speeds up to 480Mb/s.”? It shows a USB C or Thunderbolt connection. At 60.5 GHz it should be capable of transfer speeds up to 2.3 Gbps…

As far as I can tell, this is a confusion by some journalist that has been whisper-chained into reality.
Some of the first proposals for how to use the 60.5GHz band fifteen or so years ago imagined using it as "wireless USB", and a trade group was formed and a specification published. This went nowhere, and the group was disbanded in 2010 or so; but I think when some people hear 60GHz that's the first vague recollection they have.

As I've said before, current efforts for 60GHz seem to be centered around a more "network like" and "wireless like" protocol named WiGig. Is someone trying to layer USB on top of that? Perhaps, perhaps that's even what Apple is doing. But the only EVIDENCE we have seems to be the FCC filing, and all that ealks about is the power emitted by the 60GHz transmitter, not the protocols being used.

That’s their problem. As long as they have figured out a way to diagnose and repair the watches on their end, it’s all good. I never pay any attention to these ports anyway.

I want to wear the Apple Watch into water and have it withstand chinchilla dust baths, so I’m glad for the advances that help make that happen.

(I don’t actually have a chinchilla. But I have to empty my bagless vacuum canister at least twice a week and that’s about as dusty as being around a chinchilla taking a dust bath. Nobody wants to hear about my vacuum cleaner struggles. But I think we all can appreciate a chinchilla enjoying a good dust bath.)View attachment 1866352
It's great they are able to cut out refurbers so more apple watches end up as e-waste where they belong
