I tell the college students after I replace their screens, LCD covers, etc after they are broken from dropping a loaded backpack after class: Get a neoprene sleeve, side loading, and leave the sleeve in your backpack in the laptop storage pocket at all times. For added protection, get a tube sock or a pool noodle and cut in half lengthwise and put either in the bottom of the laptop storage pocket and put the neoprene sleeve on top of it.
It took me four months of heavy ebay searching to find my current laptop. Couldn't believe how many laptops were being sold with dented top and base corners at the hinges. The aluminum cases of Airs and Pros can be dented, in other words.
