I need a skin/shell type of product for my 15" macbook pro.

I saw the Speck shell but it's just too expensive at $40. I dont need anything extreme, just something that'll help against sharp objects and such.

Anyone have any suggestions?

just make sure we are on the same page, you mean an actual skin that remains on the comp full time, not just a carrying sleeve right?

A form-fitted molded piece of high-quality (i.e., thin) plastic is going to cost a bunch. $40 is about what I would expect for such a thing, by the time it was being sold to an end-user.

This also is $40 and seems great:

If you can't spend that much, then you need to build one yourself (probably cost a lot more than $40), or use a cheap sleeve for carrying and be careful when it's in use.
