Protective cover for iMac 24 aluminum

After all those wonderful ideas, I think I have to invent something myself. 🙂

Perhaps buy a computer armoire with a lock, and place the iMac in that? You can close and lock access to the computer when are done using it. That'll probably the best protection against dust, damage, etc. Though it's not very a uncostly option.

I found the very best iMac 24" cover on eBay. It's made of polyester and fits perfectly. It covers the entire screen incl. the alu stand and the connection cables. The thick and soft material protects against scratches, dust and UV light. It easily slips on and off; no buttons, bands or velcro needed. Best of all, when I put the keyboard and the mouse on the alu stand below the screen this heather grey polyester shield covers the whole thing. I'm very happy with it. That's exactly what I was looking for.

I agree, I have 2 dogs and 3 kids and I haven't a need for that. Had my iMac since Aug of 2007 and it looks the same as the day I bought it.
It's called training, for both the dogs and the kids. In fact, I have NEVER had an issue with pets and kids and my computers.
You must have some unruly and destructive kids and pets. That being the case, a good stick or a tazer gun is in order for that house.
My primary intension of protecting my new iMac 24 is to shield the screen, keyboard and mouse from dust, UV light, and from unknown flying objects.

Seems like overkill. The iMac is fairly damage resistant.
Sure my kids pound on my keyboard once in awhile and may even touch the screen or try to insert a DVD, but I've had 3 or 4 iMacs in the last 3 years and all, (but the one I'm using now) were sold in the same condition they were bought in - pristine.
Screen is glass so it doesn't scratch on a whim.
The iMac is relatively sealed so dust isn't a problem from what I can see. I wipe it down once in awhile and wipe the keyboard down a few times a week. But the keyboard gets dirty from my fingers. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before using the your new iMac keyboard.
The keyboard is sorta sealed as well. Not like the previous Apple keyboard which displayed dust and food particles and hairs behind it's clear plastic casing. So I don't see dust as a problem there at all.
I suppose if your kids constantly threw rocks at your computer then a cover is a necessity, but then I think you have a different problem.
And that cover doesn't look like it would protect much against thrown objects that would actually damage an iMac.
Hell a cover can accumulate rough particles on the inside of it and sliding it on and off over time could end up scratching the plastic back of the imac or the aluminum on the front.

i think it's ok to have a cover for your imac when you are not using it, but to have a permanent cover that protects the al casing is unnecessary.
it might hinder the flow of air/heat from the imac which is not a good thing.

And if that isn't enough, get yourself some liquid 2-compound polyurethane foam, make a box that fits the iMac with a few inches around the corners, cover the inside of the box w/ plastic, pour some of the foam mix in it, cover quickly w/ plastic, drop your Mac in it and let it dry. Cover the other half of the Mac w/ plastic and pour foam on it. Separate the halfs when the foam hardened completely.
Use a saw and some sanding paper to make the foam cover look nice and square. Now make a box of some lightweight plywood that slides over the 2 foam halfs and you can literally throw your Mac around, use it as a toy for your kids and animals and so on.
