I like Adium. It has a lot more functionality than Proteus. Yes, Proteus has a nicer standard emoticon set, a nicer sound set, etc. but although I think the standard options for Adium can be improved, you can still find anything you want on the xtras site or make it yourself if you want something different. I don't see how the Proteus xtras are "of a higher quality".

Bugs in Adium are also addressed a lot faster than Proteus'. Besides the standard stuff that comes with Adium, like the dock icon for example (I like the duck, just needs a little update to the graphics) or the other things mentioned above, it is the better app.

Definitely agree. I think you guys have done great work. And congratulations on med school. :) Do you have a specialty in mind? Maybe we'll end up working together sometime. ;)

I will, however, respond to this. Justin applied to Apple. Adam Iser, the original Adium lead developer, is now with Amazon, because that's where he chose to be out of several great options. I'm in medical school 'cause that's where I want to be. Ad hominem is probably not the best way to take this sort of discussion.

It wasn't a shot at any of the Adium developers, I use Adium on my laptop, it does a good job. I just feel Proteus has a much more Apple-like look and feel which is why he's there, the other guy is at Amazon and you're at med school. All three are very impressive.

It's a personal opinion, from what I've seen on the Proteus extra site, and what I've seen on Adium's extra site. Both have their fair share of really bad extras, I just find the ones I personally really like are only available on Proteus.

Fair enough. :)

i'll definitely put in a vote for adium. I remember initially trying out adium, proteus and fire, and back then, i think my choice was Fire, then Proteus, then Adium. I went to Adium when i realized how customizable it was. You can make it look however you want really, either through the adiumxtras.com site or just by tinkering around yourself. I really like the borderless window look, especially with transparency. And i definitely got rid of the default icon and sound set... no offence to you, evan, I just like things a bit more subtle. Thanks for the awesome program. I've definitely spread the word to my mac friends. Oh ya, awesome support site too.

here's my set up

This is true through and through. Adium can quickly be customized to your like with their extensive xtras site, and bugs are very quickly addressed, I remember one time 2 versions were released in less than a 48hr period because of a bug.

SIDE NOTE: Adium is between 88 -> 89% complete on ver. 1.0

I will also say that which ever offers video support first will be used first. So if porteus gets video (does it?) then I will grab it.

ONE HUGE PROBLEM WITH PROTEUS: NO UNIVERSAL BINARY!

Adium has it ;)

.. and it doesn't work with Rosetta. It's supposedly coming soon though.

No offence, but that's why I don't like Adium. I think that looks horrible. But I do agree with some of your points. For instance, here's what I have mine as, and I think it looks ok, but not good.

Did I hear correctly that libgaim has video support in it now? I know there have been some talk/issues lately

This is copied from the site for GAIM (1.5.0 is the current version, FWIW):

Gaim 2.0.0 beta 2 does not include voice or video ("vv") support for any protocols. We've done some work toward vv compatibility for Google Talk, but it isn't ready for the general public yet. It is unlikely this will change for the final release of Gaim 2.0.0, but vv will be a primary focus for the next major release of Gaim after that.

Does Proteus support OTR (Off the Record) encryption?

The cyberpunks site doesn't mention it. I use Adium's built-in OTR implementation (a Gaim tool) to securely communicate with PC IM clients like Trillian (OTR must run in stand-alone mode on the PC).

This would be the only way I'd use IM in the office or at a hotspot.

I think I will always be a huge fan of iChat however last week I decided to give Adium a try and now I'm hooked. I love the tabs, and how you can customize every part of it. I have a sweet chuck norris script that can generate a sweet Chuck fact with little effort.

Until iChat gets tabbed browsing I could never go back.

Thanks :) Nope, not really sure yet... been toying with opthamalogy recently, mostly 'cause I really loved the eye/orbit dissection -- but way too soon to tell. What's yours?

And on topic: While Gaim won't be sporting video in Gaim 2.0.0, and it's fairly certain Adium 1.0 won't have video either, we're currently looking into other routes to voice/video... You can already do voice via the Gizmo network using the Gizmo Adium Plugin, FWIW. And no, Adium is the only OS X messaging program which currently supports OTR out of the box.

Another adium dev chiming in here:

The scrunched up tabs issue is, in fact, being looked into. It won't be in 1.0, but there's some improvements in progress.

File transfer now works reliably for AIM in the latest experimental code :)

If there's any Cocoa coders out there that want to help make Adium better, please drop by #adium on irc.freenode.net. There's no shortage of stuff to do :D
