Zirana.com published a weekly crime summary of Cupertino, CA for late December which reveals that a prototype Apple laptop was stolen from Apple campus:
Trade Secret Theft/Possession of Stolen Property - Infinite Loop
Between 1/1 and 12/18, unknown suspect(s) took a prototype laptop worth about $100,000 from Apple Computers on Infinite Loop using an unknown method. The suspect(s) sold it to another suspect. Deputies recovered the laptop from the second suspect and he was released pending further investigation.
The laptop is said to be worth about $100,000 but has since been recovered according to the brief report. Zirana is a startup company which provides local news and information for various cities including Cupertino. The source and validity of the report, however, is unclear as the site encourages user generated submissions to the site.

The laptop is said to be worth about $100,000

...and sports a 5GHz 32-core CPU, 128GB of RAM, an 8TB SSD and 17 inch 4k OLED screen, all encased in a hardened white gold case.

The Key word is prototype

The key word here is "PROTOTYPE". Which means, small batch OR one-off. As such, the 100,000 price tag no doubt represents R&D investment as well as the time into it.

Furthermore, anyone who has worked on plastic crappy PC laptops, and a MacBook understands that the price difference is more than just an Apple Tax...the machines are very well built. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!

Why can't PCs get it?

that 100k represents what they would get had they taken pics and sent them in to that bounty website.

It would have been great if they took pictures, on the other hand now other companies neither can't see what Apple is doing. And 100k doesn't sounds that much for a prototype, it's probably what we will get over year as MacBook...

I call bull ****. IMO, this isn't even Page 2 worthy.

What does between 1/1 and 12/18 mean? Since when do we refer to dates like that?

I don't think Apple would never put an arbitrary value on a prototype like that.

It dont belive that new prototype can't be stolen from Apple HQ unless you driving a TANK. Plus it was missing for 2 weeks before noticed...loled :D
