During today's press conference. Apple's Steve Jobs revealed that they are tracking some issues with the iPhone 4's proximity sensor and expects to fix this in the next software update. We previously reported on this issue two weeks ago:
one of the most prevalent [problems] of late has been problems with the device's proximity sensors designed to sense when the phone is held up to the user's face and deactivate the device's screen, thus preventing unintended activation of buttons on the display.
Affected users found themselves accidentally ending calls or causing other unintended key presses. No word on when the software update will become available.

Great! This doesn't happen often on my iPhone 4, but when it does it's really annoying. I'm happy they're fixing it!

The white 4s better not have this problem. They should just delay the release longer if they are considering shipping a phone with so many known issues.

This could explain some of the dropped calls related to a software fix.

No software is perfect. Especially something as complex as this. I'm sure there are a lot of other internal fixes in this such as multitasking and power management. Downloading this update today.

Yawn...

...another story about iPhone 4. At least this one is actually a problem for some people. :D (No offense to the reception-issue people, I just don't think any of the issues are as widespread as the media would have you believe.)

I more afraid that Steve dodged the question of his health. Not good at all.
He said he was fine, what more do you want him to say? What bothers me more is that he said this:

" I’m fine! I was on vacation in Hawaii, but this was important enough to come back for. I’m fine."

Then 20 mins later he says this:

"... we’ve had cots in the labs, cars in the parking lots all night, we’ve been living here."

So he was in hawaii while they were "living at apple"?

I wonder if, instead of signal dropping because of the way a person holds the phone, if what is actually happening is they are hitting the end call button.... I know I have the proximity sensor issue......

So what happens, if, when I'm waiting for the software fix for the proximity sensor, my 30 days lapses? Then what?

Shall I return it now just in case?

PS answering every complaint with "if you don't like it, return it" doesn't help much.

Yeah, no kidding, he is relaxing in HI while his people where working the mad hours, eh? Reminds me of when I talk to people that mention their vacation homes...... rich much?

to mattwolfmatt

That unfortunately would be your best option for now. Apple has not announced a date for the software update

Returning this JUNK and getting a DROID

Wait -- you posted this on June 8th...

"But since it's not on Verizon I just bought a Droid Incredible and LOVE it :D" - terryzx

:confused::confused::confused:

He might be telling the truth . . . if he "bought the Droid Inc on June 8" it should be showing up somewhere around July 20. (I was on the waiting list for a while, decided to go back to iphone.)

Get it exchanged for a new one that doesn't have that issue. That's what my friend who had the proximity issue did. Took his back to the Apple Store, got it exchanged for a new one that didn't have any proximity issue. Problem solved.

he also said that they have been working 22 days in a row...

major issue

The proximity sensor has been a huge problem for me. I've already gone back to the apple store and received a replacement. Unfortunately, the replacement iPhone 4 I received is still having the same problem.

While on the phone for 20 minutes, I managed to mute the phone over 5 times and it started calling other friends too. Not really acceptable when it's calling people in other time zones late at night.

I hope the software update comes out soon, I'm getting really tired of talking on my bluetooth headset when not in my car.

The proximity sensor problem is easily the #1 problem with the phone. I'm glad he mentioned it today. If he hadn't, I might've returned the phone before the 30 days are up but they acknowledged it and said it would be addressed in the next software update. That, to me, is enough. If they don't do it and it's still a problem, Apple will take care of it if I go back after the 30 days and want to return the phone.

Yeah, Steve's such a slacker.

He didn't answer the question. He said that je was fine but better in Hawaii. That is dodging the question if I've ever seen it.

How will this update affect me if I DON'T have the proximity sensor issue? Both mine and my partner's phones are fine. Am I OK to still install this upcoming update?
