Interesting... Linux for the PS 2. Do programs written for Liux work on all of the different varieties of Linux or will PS 2 Linux only work with programs written for that particular flavor?

Anyone know? Sorry if this is a dumb question to all of you Linux fans out there. The only experience I have with Linux is watching it F--- over my hard drive when I was installing it on my TiBook.

This has absolutly nothing to do with Mac, why is it here?
People have asked questions about Linux on PowerPC which atleast have some relevence, but Linux and Playstation 2 has (IMHO) no place in 'General Mac Discussion', if you really want to talk about Playstation 2 and Linux in these Mac forums then 'Community Discussion' is the place.

I know he's a newbie, but new or old it's not difficalt to figure out that a PS2 and Linux has nothing to do with Mac discussion, but hey!
It's no big deal, just thought I'd make the point, that's all. ;)

maybe he was trying to say, since OSX is POSIX compatible, that if these free games made by PS2 devs could work under OSX!

think a little. but to answer, it depends, if the code has any assembly or uses PS2 specific libraries, then no. but if its portable code, then yes.

Hmmm...

I was about to agree with the fact that this shouldn't be here until I noticed the description of this forum: "Mac/Apple/Tech topics that don't fall in other categories"

'Tis a Tech Topic.  :p

Er...HELLO!...The forum is called "General Mac Discussion", IMHO this means Tec chat about Mac, but as I said it's no biggie, I was just pointing out that I couldn't see the relevence that PS2 and Linux had in a forum for Mac discussion.

PS2 Linux

PS2 (Playstation 2) uses a MIPS processor and custom sound, graphics and I/O chips. Actually they use the processor in the original Playstation for its I/O processor. Crazy!

Do you really think a program for this is going to work on a Mac?

If you had the source to rebuild on a Mac, even Linux on a Mac it probably wouldn't be that impressive anyway. If it worked at all given the special purpose chips. You would have to resort to XWindows. Anyhow, the PS2 only has 32 MB of memory which is not expandable.

I have both Yellow Dog Linux and Linux for PS2 and I can tell you that this isn't feasible.

May this topic close soon.

Here's my 2¢ worth.

This thread SHOULD have been placed into the Community forum, not the General Mac Discussion one since it falls under "random discussions about anything". It is NOT Mac related, so it belongs there.

End of story...

Now lets have one of the moderators move this thread to the bowels so that it can be evacuated properly.

At last, someone has backed me up! Thanks Alpha ;)

We can just answer his question as well!

The answer is no, if you try to run a compliled program on it that was not meant for the PS2, it will not run. If you can get the source, and recompile the program assuming you can find all the dependancies needed, that you should be able to get this to work.

An to the thread about playing PS2 games on the mac, that is even less possible. real computers would have a really hard time playing a game because they are not fast enough. These game consoles are optimized for JUST game playing, and for this are much faster than mac/pcs. Let alone just because you can linux to run on it, doesn't mean you can/would want to emulate a PS2 on another platform to play games. If you want a PS2, go buy one...

For that, I give you a large stinking pile of bullsh*t.

There are plenty of computers that are much more powerful then the game consoles. There are even some people that built systems with games in mind, and have them blowing the doors off of consoles on games that were ported to the pc. It all has to do with the coding. If you want to spend the time to alter the code, or port it over to the computer, then it will run. Provided you do a good job of it of course. :p

GTA3 is a game that started on a console and has been ported over to the pc. It has been placed into an emulation shell so that it will run.
