I look at the pictures here and the PS3 slim looks really
    nicely designed inside:

That much is encouraging and is very much more important
than what I'm about to mention. But... I have to say it, I do
love a nice box. And I love the way Apple wraps up everything
so beautifully you have that emotional attachment even before
you start using their stuff. Even the USB connectors have their
    own individual wrappers.

In that respect the PS3 packaging is pretty ghastly. I mean,
seriously, is this the best they could manage?

That's the sort of cheapo cardboard I'd expect cereal packets
to come in. But then, perhaps I'm a bit strange with my boxing
obsession. So, am I the only one that cares about this stuff?

That may or may not be true. Over the years, however, Sony
has produced some wonderfully designed products (e.g. some
of their minidisc players). I would have thought designing nice
packaging would be the easy bit.

the box for the slim is 100 times better than the orignal the Slim you can actaully use it to carry around if you want to go somewhere with it.

though id still recomend finding something better to cary it in :)

Hmm? The box for my original fat PS3 (early 2008, 40GB model) has a handle on the box, easy as heck to carry.

I'm glad someone said it. Seems like there really is no pleasing some people.

Not so much the box itself as the internal box compartments.

They are made of what looks like the cheapest grade cardboard
money can buy. I'm not sure they are very good at doing what
they need to do: protect the machine when it's being stored in
    the box.

The PSP box here is quite nice. It's a bit Apple-ish in that everything is stacked and seperated.

Apple do go above and beyond the call of duty for some things though, packaging being one of them. It's not fair to criticise virtually everyone else because Apple are one of the few to make pretty boxes.

Opened a Wii or 360 any time recently? Identical packaging style. Or a TV? Most consumer packaging is minimal and cheap, because it's a waste of money to spend lots on it when it'll probably go in the bin.

It doesn't matter if Sony produced some nice looking products, Sony is not a design company. For Apple, industrial design is the product. How a Mac looks like is not an after thought, it is the thought.

You are absolultley incorrect. Sony spends quite a bit of time and money in to industrial design. Sony is as much a design company as Apple is, in fact they have awards to prove it. Sony and how their products look is taken as serious as Apple takes it, sure its not white and at times not minimalistic, but at least it's not out of date technology wise before its even out of the box (hello every apple pc out there).;)
