once the PS3 has been out for a year and a half, see if you still have all the same complaints.

Gold. I've been waiting for you to say that! *adds to list of things we should wait for with PS3*

ahem,
Wait for Xmas, next few months, Motorstorm, Virtual Fighter 5, the next year, E3, Price drop, the next year and a half.

I think I know why 360 users are smug. They're actually playing games now, a great library so far and a few more super-anticipated titles coming out soon. Whilst the Sony folk just keep banging on about waiting.

Just wait for PS4, I suppose.

Becasue the Wii library is golden right now....
and so was the 360 library after a mere 6 months of sales! :D

I'm just saying the "platinum" titles won't really start hitting shelves until the fall.

I guess Sony was spending all their time on making robust hardware rather than robust software in the beginning. :p

;)

I'm the first to admit there is currently a lack of games(not just on the PS3), but some people(not you in particular jimmi) seem to think that will be the case for the next 7 years.
I just don't understand that logic -- the games are coming (400 within the next calendar year for PlayStation brand alone)

Its a fair reason to hold off on a purchase, but is it a fair reason to say Sony completely dropped the ball or that their system is garbage?
(guess that depends on where your loyalty lies)

I humbly apologize for Japan for putting out such a pile of garbage like the PS3. :D

Seriously, we are done here with the PS3, everyone is running to hide them somewhere so we don't have to admit SONY suckered us too.

But they are just so damn big, so inevitably a friend spots it and says, what the hell is that, and then starts laughing and rolling on the floor all the while pointing to the paperweight we call the PS3.

Are we there yet? a few more months son... then the PS3 will rock...

I am a true gamer, I loved my PS1 and PS2 and heck I have owned almost every console ever to be made even the SNK NEOGEO, I am even in the console capital of the planet, Japan, and guess what, I think I am being very objective. I am not speaking about something I don't own, and it isn't my first console.

I buy'em the moment they come out, I buy the best titles and a play them. I finished Resistance a few hours after I bought it, same with Gears of War a brilliant work. The PS3 is like no other console today. It is the unraveling of SONY, it is the point in time when SONY losses its edge and made some pretty bad decisions.

If you believe games will just flood in and surpass XBOX 360 or even gain near parity, I doubt it.
Even the Japanese game makers are complaining about the development tools for the PS3. I should see the games before you anyway as they are usually released here in Japan first.

If my shelves are empty in JapanLand yours will be empty for longer. Trust me, I am not happy about it but there comes a time when you gotta know what's going down, and today, SONY is going down.

Twilight Princess, Wii Sports (Japan, since it isn't bundled there), Mario Strikers, WarioWare, Dragon Quest Swords (the second coming in Japan), Resident Evil 4, Paper Mario all seem to be doing pretty well!

I'd post games sales numbers but you'd probably retort with something else and the cycle would never end.

just have to add that the bolded games above, are Gamecube games with a fancy control scheme. Nintendo really suckered a lot of people into buying the Wii by abandoning the GC and porting it's big name games over to the Wii (me inlcuded :().

October/November/December is what I am waiting for(for both PS3 and Wii games)
After that(once 08 starts) we'll see a entourage of games for all systems, then what will we complain about?
(it runs too hot, its still ugly, I can't lift it without getting a hernia, etc.) :p

Does anyone remember the DS launch? N64 games like Mario 64 DS and Rayman DS with a virtual analog stick? Three or four GBA games with a touch screen added?

We'll see what happens by the end of the year. Wii has a huge library that's going to hit; I haven't seen as much from Sony, but they do at least have some AAA titles so we'll see what happens.

The only game that did that, was Super Paper Mario(of the ones you listed) RE4 and LoZ:TP were out on the NGC.

And I think Super Paper Mario used the Wii Remote decently...could have been done with NGC controller, but not as well

Thats why 360's are flying off the shelves.......because its so much better. :p

You do have to consider that Microsoft's current sales are a HUGE improvement. The last two years of the XBox's life never had it selling more than 3 digits a week; generally 100-200 units a week. Now it's selling 10 times that, and every time a game like Blue Dragon comes out it spikes and remains higher.

Microsoft's reputation in Japan is dirt and Sony's is gold. Sony's is dropping rapidly and Microsoft is gaining some.

Res 4 yeah since it was a re-release (just like rockstar is doing with Bully on 360/Wii), but they took out widescreen mode in TP for GC, plus delayed it a month (after delaying it for how long?) so they made it real clear which version was the preferred version (plus my cube was coughing up blood)

I just felt kinda ripped off... It would be like Sony holding off God of War II to put it on PS3 and adding some lame sixaxis thing into it.

does that justify it though? Seems to me many of the biggest name Wii games thus far have been mini-games (Wii Sports, Wario Ware, Mario Party 98453) and GC ports (RE4, SPB, TP) This Fall is gonna be great for Wii owners (personally it's just Mario Galaxy that is a must have) but this year has hardly been mind-blowing as of now.

"dropping rapidly"....
*re-reads thread title* :p

Price is killing sales, not much else - once that comes down a bit more and they have mo-betta titles on teh shelves, sales will increase even more. (quote me if you like)

Sony is taking the Ninty philosohpy, they are no longer banking on paying for exclusive 3rd party titles, but are more focused on their World Wide Studios and delivering incredible first party titles.

[EDIT]
Ed H. sends his greetings from JPN.

He says Wii's are in stock and available at most stores in akihabara.
However, DS lites sell out fast(and there are even lines for them in some places).

He also had a lot of trouble finding NG: Sigma for PS3 and PSP hardware accessories.
(Talkman was nowhere, and the Camera very hard to find)

Anywho, back on topic(PS3 sales increasing in Japan)

(just like rockstar is doing with Bully on 360/Wii)
.
But Bully will be getting updated graphics(Xbox 360, and hopefully Wii), new controller system(Wii) plus new levels...or content.

but they took out widescreen mode in TP for GC,

Bummer...that does suck.

It would be like Sony holding off God of War II to put it on PS3 and adding some lame sixaxis thing into it.
If Sixaxis was used the whole game(the motion part) Wii's control is a much bigger part of the system then PS3's is.

Still I see what you are saying.

Microsoft's reputation in Japan is dirt and Sony's is gold. Sony's is dropping rapidly and Microsoft is gaining some.

This is very true. The gold on SONY is flaking off. Japanese sometimes are very narrow minded. Its kinda like you guys in the states who love Japanese cars so much, blind loyalty, for the life of me I don't know why.

In Japan we love them too, except, in Japan the most popular cars have less than 65hp. I don't think 65hp would cut it in America. But, that represents the overwhelming majority of new car sales in Japan. They are called k-cars.

I have, but most Japanese never sat behind anything that has more than 100hp. So they can't appreciate anything that comes from overseas, no way to develop any sense of perspective or an educated opinion. The same is true for the XBOX 360, since it ain't Japanese there instinct is to avoid it, not even try it on the store floor.

Seriously, people in Japan would just walk by and say its junk without ever even playing one game. SONY depends on this type of attitude in Japan, and Toyota on the aura of hyper-reliability. So Japan numbers mean nothing when you see a SONY PS3 sale because they don't represent anything but consumer loyalty to SONY and an instinct to buy Japanese.

We label everything here and I mean everything, with nation of origin. Even sections of stores are split between Japanese made products and "the others". Even food products, no matter how insignificant. I included a pic of some meat from my fridge, I know most of you can't read it, but the white text on the black block on the upper right says AMERICA. Meaning the origin of the beef is America. Its put there to discourage consumers from buying foreign products. In fact, Japanese news just keeps saying how dangerous American beef is and how nasty it taste, no kidding. But its mainly propaganda to encourage Japanese to buy more expensive domestic beef, and it works.

Sooo, when Microsoft sells an XBOX 360 it really does mean something. It means this person who has had so much exposure to Japanese consoles, and the PS3 and the Japanese instinct and education to by well Japanese, decided to break ranks. A very hard thing to do btw. It means they truly truly where impressed with the XBOX 360.

So sometimes, there is a little bit more to those numbers than meets the eye. There are very very very few in the Japanese press that say even one good thing about the XBOX. Most of this has to do with blind loyalty to Japanese brands.

In fact, Apple is being ripped apart in the Japanese press as junk with the iPhone and how Japanese phones are just light years ahead. The strategy is simple and effective initially and it makes Japanese feel good. But at the end of the day, the phone will arrive on our shores and like the iPod and XBOX 360, it will slowly eat away at the nonsense and be shown to be a pretty damn good product worthy of our attention.

Man, Akihabara is Otaku territory, it does not represent anything real. Who goes there to buy anything other than tourist and people into cosplay

Its like going to some electronics district in any major city and saying, gosh, this "SUPER DUPER BIG ASS ELECTRONICS STORE" is sold out here so it must be sold out in the whole damn country.

Nah, you have to look at the mainstream outlets that are found across Japan. Places that are like BestBuy in the USA, or Yamada Denki, Yodobashi Camera and BEST in Japan. If it's sold out outside AKIHABARA then you got something.

BTW, Akihabara is where technology goes to die. It is where Japanese companies test ideas. I worked for a short time for a product viability company. Products where dumped in Akihabara to test consumer interest and there viability outside of Japan. The companies that dropped the products had little interest in actually following through with the ideas. A suckers paradise that place.

XBOX 360, it will slowly eat away at the nonsense and be shown to be a pretty damn good product worthy of our attention.

Then in a suden rush of reality everyone will notice those worthy 360 failing from the red light special. What really makes you think the Sony console can't get enough good games going to keep this a 3 leg race? As I see it right now the console is in the same place the 360 was in 2005/2006 and look at it now(except the failing hardware)

Like the coded one said....calling death to a system before the ball gets rolling is wild. I guess there will be NO games coming to the PS3 at all and of course I know the other consoles have big ones as well but whats to say all of them won't get a share....I don't understand this logic of sony being shared out.

Sony share won't be as big as it was last time but to think they will fall off after establishing 3.5+ user base is wild.

I'm a true gamer as well....I really enjoy the PS3 and I don't see a failing system from my standpoint.

Note: If we can count the games on the system that are "good" then we really don't have none...:)...that goes to all consoles

Bless

An excellent and intelligent reply from first hand knowledgeable experience

Thank you madfuku. Your post was very interesting and highlights how sales figures can be misleading, and how cultural differences effect buying habbits.

A+++ for the post. :)

Then in a suden rush of reality everyone will notice those worthy 360 failing from the red light special.

You gotta have selective memory because the PS1 and PS2 had high failure rates in Japan. In fact my PS2 was replaced 4 times here and my PSP lost a whole line of pixels out of the box not to mention the scratched disks. The store wouldn't replace it so I had to mail it to SONY and three weeks later they sent me a refurbished one.

That being said, I bought 3 XBOX 360's imported from US when they first launched and 1 failed and was replaced by MS for free and the other ones never had a problem. Not to mention that Microsoft has stepped up and extended warranties and refunded people who paid for repairs.

The PS3 has something like a 1% failure rate. So what, my XBOX 360 has thousands of hours of use over my PS3. MS is not perfect, hell if we look back a few years people said they wouldn't have gotten this far, and yet here it is.

In this gen of consoles there will be a winner and right now it is not SONY. When all those great games come out we will see. But, for now its a paperweight. I like to judge things that I can see, use and experience, what it will or can do is of little interest to me because I can just flip the argument over and say you know XBOX 360 can do a lot of new crap in the future too, and how about those future games! man they're gunna rock.

I gave SONY the benefit of the doubt right, I bought a PS3, I also gave MS a chance I bought a XBOX 360.

My XBOX 360 was never a paperweight incidentally, I always had some decent content. The reality is, it should have been Microsoft who sits in SONYs shoes right now not the other-way around, but things change.

I for one think SONY needs a swift kick in its ass. To me XBOX Live is the single most important feature of the XBOX 360 and Japanese have never been very good at building software. This is why Apple has devastated the Japanese mp3 market, no iTunes competitor.

You feel me? When the games come, I will buy them. But I ain't going to stick up for SONY and I ain't gunna bash Microsoft because there parts suppliers suck.

You know, my iMac G5 20" just failed, the power supply just died. Am I going to go all ape on Apple, nah man, the part supplier sucked, as a product evolves they change part suppliers to address issues. From what I understand, SONY is in the middle of downgrading parts to try to save on production costs, so your hopes might come true with a bunch of dead PS3's.

But then, I like to deal with reality and the reality is SONY ain't what it use to be.

Microsoft because there parts suppliers suck.
MS said it is a design problem, not a supply problem.....but it is a liitle of both.
(depending on what your problem is) - scratched cd's = supplier; ROD = design

This is a 3rd gen home console from Sony, and they got it(the hardware) right this time.
They changed strategies with games(1st party worldwide studios instead of 3rd party exclusives) and we will see if that pays off, but you can bet theri hardware will stand the test of time.
I know its software that makes a system, but if MS problems continue - all the things that make people "anit-sony" may also have the same/similar bad taste from MS this gen.

But Like I've said before, the picture will be a lot clearer in 08/09. ;)

When I finally buy into the next gen (after already having entered next gen .5 with the Wii ;) ) it will be a PS3 that I buy, not a 360.

It's a hard choice to make sure. But with all these failures and with my luck in hardware that I always seem to have (see: none), I think I would be better off getting a PS3.

I am a big fan of the JRPG, which the 360 won't have alot of. Shooters aren't my thing. Heck, I'm not even excited about Halo 3. FF XIII, that makes me sweat with joy.

Anyway, that's my two cents. :D

Heck, I'm not even excited about Halo 3. FF XIII, that makes me sweat with joy.

Count me as the odd one out - I don't want either of them games :D recycled FPS on one hand, interactive soap opera on the other.
