I figure very few may be impacted by this, but given my own experience with ATT Next, I thought I would highlight that ATT does not allow you to provision an alternative carrier's eSIM while the new phone is under a Next contract. Only at the point of the iPhone being unlocked will they allow an eSim to be activated for an alternative additional carrier. I say this having petitioned ATT to unlock my iPhone early given that I had been an ATT customer for nearly 30 years and live in a rural state where they have uneven coverage. They refused and I no longer get phones from them. YMMV.

Was trying to figure out what the best option was for buying the 12 pro by Apple with locked or unlocked for this same reason. Is there any cons to doing it unlocked and then using my old at&t Sim?

How about the other way around? Can you have the AT&T sim as your esim and then use the physical sim as your alternative one?

Definitely unlocked. ATT is completely inflexible, otherwise. No issue unlocked, and you can use your old SIM as long as it is 5g friendly, if you’re in such an environment. Otherwise you might need to get a new one.
