Early going, I would cancel upon faceid failure, (sleeping, in bed reading, awkward hand mold) assuming it was an issue with the device. What I’ve learned is to immediately enter your passcode and the thing just gets better at identifying you.

“If Face ID fails to recognize you, but the match quality is higher than a certain threshold and you immediately follow the failure by entering your passcode, Face ID takes another capture and augments its enrolled Face ID data with the newly calculated mathematical representation. This new Face ID data is discarded after a finite number of unlocks and if you stop matching against it. These augmentation processes allow Face ID to keep up with dramatic changes in your facial hair or makeup use, while minimizing false acceptance.” - in the Apple FaceID Security document.

TLDR: if you are having problems with faceid authentication when you use it in bed, waking up, in awkward poses, immediately use your passcode and it will “learn” your face and use habits.

I think this is a good idea if your face is in the right position.

I tend to have this issue when using the phone in bed and I’ve not yet positioned myself or the phone in a place where the camera will see me. I then click cancel and swipe up and it unlocks.

But what happens if I pass my phone to eg my wife and faceID fils but she knows my passcode so she unlocks that way?

I tried using this method to train mine laying flat on the table. I did it about a dozen or so times in a row, no improvement whatsoever.

Assuming she doesn’t look a heap like you, she’ll be recognised as someone else and her face data will be discarded. They don’t build systems like these without thinking about all the possible scenarios.
