For those running the iPadOS 14 beta on 2017 model iPad Pros I suggest not enabling smart invert at this time. I'm unsure whether this issue is limited to the 2017 models of iPP or all iPads.

I was fiddling around with Accessibility settings this morning on my iPP 12.9 (2017) which had iPadOS 14 Public Beta on it and ended up having to do a restore.

When smart invert is enabled all screen content is black so while the screen is technically on, you see nothing but the glow of the backlit display. I'm guessing that the display and OS are still functioning fine, just nothing can be seen since everything is black. The setting persists with a restart so the only recourse (other than somehow managing to toggle smart invert blindly by knowing where to press) is to factory reset and restore the device from backup if you have it.

Maybe plug in an external monitor?

Tried that using the lightning to HDMI adapter with an external power source applied for good measure but got nothing. Seemed logical to me at the time to at least try it. The fact that it wouldn't makes me lean towards the belief that the display was displaying everything as black but that's just pure speculation on my part.

When I saw that on Reddit a couple of days ago I wondered if it applied only to the 10.5 Pro, which both people with the problem had. Pretty severe problem given the fix required.

Yeah, I wonder if it applies only to the 2017's or if it extends to other iPads as well.

Heh, it's beta though right . . after the brief panic wore off and I got it into recovery mode I breathed a sigh of relief. Took about an hour or so for my iCloud backup to restore everything so all is well, other than having to do minor app settings tweaks and password prompts.
