setteB.IT reports [Google translation] that unauthorized Mac clone manufacturer Psystar has announced the launch of a new licensing program that will enable third-party PC manufacturers to preload their systems with Psystar's boot loader to allow for simple installation of Mac OS X Snow Leopard directly from a retail disc. The move comes as Psystar has launched an increasing number of its own hardware products over the past 18 months that offer the ability to run Mac OS X.
In an effort to spread the Snow Leopard experience to an ever-expanding number of people, the licensing initiative will allow manufacturers to have their hardware Psystar Certified and have their computers pre loaded with our unique technology including the Darwin Universal Boot Loader (DUBL). Qualifying products must fall in Desktop, Server or Mobile categories. Once a product is certified, consumers can purchase it off the shelf or through standard channels and when labeled Psystar Certified would allow the installation of Snow Leopard simply by inserting the retail OS X DVD.
Apple and Psystar have been engaged in several ongoing lawsuits over the clone manufacturer's unauthorized use of and modification of Apple's Mac OS X offerings for installation on non-Apple hardware.

Pystar has gone from interesting at the beginning to just freakin annoying now. They just don't seem to quit or they just don't get it..

I can see the disclaimer now...

Disclaimer **The Windows PC will crash becuase the Mac OS is too powerfull for the available device. Please stop installing, and buy a real machine. Get a Mac! The "gotta Dell" is an ol' bag of tricks!!!

Poof!!! ...your new PC just blew to bits! :p

Psystar is certainly upping the ante. Seems like they are playing a game of 'chicken' with Apple.

They have the courage of their own convictions.

I hope apple begins to create updates that cause non apple hardware to crash often in order to deter anyone from taking this route. psystar is going to really hurt OSX in the long run.

Bringing a way for the masses to put an Apple OS on non-Apple hardware could potentially be a very good thing for Apple later on down the road when its time to buy a new computer.

Psystar machines are PCs: Peice of Crap

I finally got my hands on one if these machines and the experience was just like I thought it was: terrible! The performance was sluggish, the rendering of graphics and animations was very laggy and the machines Wi-Fi capabilities rendered non-existant at some points. It doesn't even have Bluetooth. Completely poor user experience. Mac OS really does work the best on a Mac. Psystar's support team are idiots. They couldn't even answer a simple question about Automator. I rarely ever have an outburst when posting my views here on MacRumors, but I must say, Psystar = EPIC FAIL. So if you can't afford a Mac, you better save up for one rather than settle for this horrible alternative.

While I don't necessarily agree that what Psystar does is right, the fact that people have successfully run OS X on a Dell Mini 9 (a relatively cheap netbook) does prove that you do NOT need a complete powerhouse machine to efficiently run the OS.

My guess is that they are trying to entice some big (deep pocketed) hardware supplier like Dell or HP to join in the fight against Apple. If they can hook someone big, then they won't have to fund the whole legal battle.

It seems to me that Apple could easily solve this by creating a licensed version of OSX that IS authorized for 3rd party hardware and then just charge $1500 per license for it. No one in their right mind would buy it... ever... but they would be able to more effectively fight the battle against these cloners. Apples model and pricing is based on the fact that they only support Apple hardware. Pystar is able to play this game because they are arguing that they are not violating anything. If there were an available license that specifically stated it was for 3rd parties, it would be a lot harder for Pystar to play the game they are playing.

Psystar actually thinks they can collect licensing fees that then allow a machine to be illegally loaded with OS X? Wow.

Playing with fire.

It's alright, Psystar can go right ahead pissing in the sandbox. This will all be sorted out at trial . . . and that'll be the last you'll ever hear of Apple's IP being violated like this.

Psystar "certified" ... that's hilarious.

They're essentially pirating OS X. It's meant for Macs, and how you can "certify" you'll run someone elses software is ridiculous.

Psystar should produce a OS X installed Netbook. It would be the perfect product to really launch their company since it is one area where Apple doesn't even directy compete.

I wonder how Psystar management would feel if some other company decided to ignor Psystar's license and begin distributing Psystar's bootloader without their permission?

A little taste of their own medicine?

They aren't "pirating" anything. Nothing I've seen says they're encourgaing people to load copies of OS X they haven't paid for.

Psystar ripped me off fo $1,645.00, thats what I get...

I bought an open pro from Psystar, it never worked, 100s of emails and 100s of phone calls and they never did anything, no replacement, no refund. I am not a techie guy, so I hired someone to look at my box, when he opened it, nothing inside was connected, one of the hard drives had a crack in it. Then I was told I needed to order a restore disc, still nothing. At last, I contacted the BBB (better business bureau) and Psystar would not even answer to them. Please tell others before they make the same mistake as me. I am donating it now for parts to a local non-profit and buying myself a new mac, but will spends the next couple of years warning others not to deal with Psystar. Not so much for revenge, but really to save others the hassle I had to deal with, I wanted to believe in the underdog, but they were just a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Haha! That's great. Best part is, there's nothing illegal about an open-source boot loader. I know I'd buy a Psystar certified dell over a non-Psystar certified HP. Take that, Apple!

Their bootlaoder, from what I understand, is OSS. What you should be asking is if another company started using the Psystar certificate without paying them, and that is definitely illegal, no EULA around it.

So far Psystar has yet to prove that they have purchased a single copy of OSX. None. Their CEO testified that all records were "lost"

Maybe when Pystar and Palm are both defeated by Apple, Palm will hire Pystar to write a syncing solution for them.
