These guys have got to have some serious backing - the question is who ? Microsoft ? Dell ? HP ?

The other question is why ?

If another PC manufacturer wanted to follow in Psystar's footsteps, why in the world would they buy a license from Psystar? The necessary bootloaders are all available via open source channels.

The licensing of this "unique technology" seems very hypocritical on Psystar's part. I wonder how Psystar would feel if another company started using their software without following the rules?

Haha! That's great. Best part is, there's nothing illegal about an open-source boot loader. I know I'd buy a Psystar certified dell over a non-Psystar certified HP. Take that, Apple!

Their bootlaoder, from what I understand, is OSS. What you should be asking is if another company started using the Psystar certificate without paying them, and that is definitely illegal, no EULA around it.

how is stealing OS X not piracy? As someone else pointed out, they can't even prove they are buying a license for the machines they sell. They almost certainly are not.

Would you be surprised if someone started selling knock off nokias loaded with genuine Nikia firmware that had been re-engineered to run on a non nokia handset?

The mentality of pirates regarding intellectual property is scary.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11a Safari/525.20)

It's a brilliant idea, but what would be even more brilliant is if they would sell their bootloader to ordinary consumers. I'd take two.

I finally got my hands on one if these machines and the experience was just like I thought it was: terrible! The performance was sluggish, the rendering of graphics and animations was very laggy and the machines Wi-Fi capabilities rendered non-existant at some points. It doesn't even have Bluetooth. Completely poor user experience. Mac OS really does work the best on a Mac. Psystar's support team are idiots. They couldn't even answer a simple question about Automator. I rarely ever have an outburst when posting my views here on MacRumors, but I must say, Psystar = EPIC FAIL. So if you can't afford a Mac, you better save up for one rather than settle for this horrible alternative.

Your post sounds like someone just made that up on the spot. I've heard nothing but positives about psystar machines.

Your post = EPIC FAIL because why shouldn't psystar machines run just as good as 'real' macs because the hardware is exactly the same as PCs don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Obviously the casing is different though

The bootloader only gets you halfway there. You also need compatible hardware. InsanlyMac can tell you all you want to know without buying anything from Psystar if you wanna go the Hackintosh route...

Well, I bought a custom built box with the Psystar booter to run 10.6.1. I gotta say, the machine runs perfect, super-fast (core i7 975) and runs all apps perfect. I havn't had a single issue with it? And for $1499 I got a computer that would have cost me $3000 + through Apple. This is the first "non-Apple" machine I have ever bought, but to run Apples high end apps like FCP studio 3, some of us cant afford the Apple hardware to run it that was it was meant to run. For me, the Psystar enabled PC I got was a perfect alternative. So to each his own I suppose.....

The problem with Apple is that it does not make what some people want:
<snip>
So, in those instances the hackintosh may be the only alternative until Apple delivers what people want.

Emphasis mine. The fact is that Apple has done a great job deciding which products to market and sell. The number of people who want what you describe is inconsequential compared to its consumer base.

Henry Ford summed it up best:
If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse.

Just because people want something does not give them the right to subvert the end user agreement in Mac OS X. If you don't like the offerings then buy a PC or Linux box. The sense of entitlement by some and the ability to do what they want is scary. This is just like the Palm crap going on. If you want choice, then your choice is to go elsewhere to those who sell what you want.

That's not Apple's problem though. You want something that Apple does not offer and is not obligated in the least to offer it. Tough. That's how things work in business.

The Henry Ford quote is very apt. Apple doesn't attempt to nor does it care to try to reach over market segment out there. That's Apple's legal choice to make.

So because you can't afford something, you have the right to break EULA so that you can have it? Even further, the company that you bought it from has shown no proof that they bought legal copies of OS X.

I can't afford a Mercedes or Jaguar, but I don't feel the need to buy a less than legal cheap one from Vinny down the street.

I doubt anyone would want to be certified but hell they should sell it to consumers directly. I'd buy it and install it on my i7 with a gt 295 I built that costs less than my iMac and install snow leopard on it in a second and I know plenty of others that would too

and to gibbz above
I'm not defending psystar but unless u didn't notice apple hasn't exactly been able to prove that hat psystar is doing is in violation of the Eula. Otherwise this case would have been over a long time ago. Obviously psystar found a nice loophole somewhere.

Fact is more people would buy mac Osx if they could put it on their own equipment and not pay the apple tax. But apple makes less if u don't buy their signifantly overpriced hardware.

apple could let this go for a while and then break the boot loader with a system update and make OS X on those PC's a pain to work.

All the psystar customers would be prime apple customers because they want to get their OS X in a reliable machine.

If you read my post I never said I bought it from Psystar, I had a box built with the Psystar boot-loader installed. I purchased a legal version of Snow Leopard MYSELF as well as retail versions of the FCP suite, so I am not doing anything wrong or breaking any laws. I'm just running a bad-ass machine for $1499 instead of $3000. I have bought over a dozen Apple computers in my lifetime. Maybe its just time for Apple to understand WHY people are buying Psystars and other Hackintosh CPU's and offer their own alternative?

I just can't understand how Psystar can keep doing these kinds of things and not get drug over shards of broken glass by Apple.

Maybe you should look at it the other way around. What did you think was going to happen when Apple decided to stop making Macs, and start selling PCs with an Apple logo? Real Mac-fans should love this, as you are finally freed from Apple's legacy of stupid product decisions and inflexible configurations.

Apple wanted the benefits of Windows and the higher volume Windows hardware has, but doing so has consequences.

Apple has about as much chance of stopping this as Lexmark does in stopping people from refilling ink cartridges.

I seriously think paystar is under contract by MS's Steve Ballmer to mess with them. Really!
Apple is a threat to the pc industry;therefore MS's OS: Windows. The Mac is more reliable and doesn't have that bull crap crap-ware installed. The pc is a licensed bag of junk that has been commercially iterated into a worn-out, disposable box!
I'll never trade in my Mac for a Mac clone. Never! You won't get the support and you will get hit with viruses b/c anyone making money on Mac clones needs to make money and a vulnerable system is a money making system.

God, I wish I still had my ancient ninja skills for the Ming Dynasty era,I'd katana the heck out of paystar!!!

"Psystar's vision of open computing is to provide users with the freedom to choose which OS's they install on their hardware," the company said in a press release.

I think I'll buy all of Psystar system's stock and pay them with "Condfederate" dollars (legal tender, albeit 1860 - 1865) or the well known "Monopoly" dollars, I haven't decided which. Afterall, it is MY vision of open monetary which is to provide consumers with the freedom to choose which currency they prefer in their wallet!

The mentality of pirates regarding intellectual property is scary.

If Nokia sold their firmware to the general public in a store and I myself could purchase it, and this mythical company was never claiming that their phone was a genuine Nokia phone, then I see nothing wrong with it. Nokia gets money for their software, this mythical company sells their hardware, and everyone can go home happy.

The mentality of people who want locked down devices is scary.

I just can't understand how Psystar can keep doing these kinds of things and not get drug over shards of broken glass by Apple.

because the EULA is unenforcable at least in Europe. Apples EULA is most likely invalid due to European law. So Apple takes a huge risk to go to court because a court decision could officially invalidate Apple's EULA and then a hundred other companies start doing the same and Apple has no legal recourse left.

God, ive never seen so much fail. Before I bought a macbook, I ran Snow Leopard on a Hackintosh Acer 2420. The performance was very good for a laptop of such low specs. In fact, it still runs 10.5.7 and all my apps as a backup for my macbook. I'm sure Psystars run even better because they don't run on as many hacks as mine do. Hackintoshes are great - I NEVER would have bought a macbook until I used OSX on the Acer first.

That being said, I kinda supported as long as they bought legal copies of OSX (if they did, anyways). This, however is just a dick move.
