Ok I get it but I edited the post, there is no reson to make any difference between a computer speaker and a regular small format speaker IMO. And thus if you get rid of the distinction, of cource there are good speakers but I´m suspicios about speakers that are branded as computer speakers.

Yes, agreed.

Yes, apologies, touche Subsonix. I was surprised too with my own error.

Actually - looking in the UK, where I am.

The MBP is £1300
The Dell XPS M1530 (with similar spec) is £800 (used £650)

so I could save £650 - or get 2 for the same price !!

With the Dell I get more HD (and options eg BluRay) - but the Apple has the better screen.

Its the UK prices where I get my ideas - so in the US there seems to be less difference. Hence my previous mistake.

Cost?

I agree with the person who made the earlier posts about this being a project and not a product. My work computer is a Macbook, and it has been super reliable running both Leopard and Vista Business. However, for some of my hobby stuff, I wouldn't mind giving this a try. My misgivings are that I am not about to send any money to this company until I see that orders have actually been fulfilled, and with a couple of open family pack licenses, I won't pay for another copy of Leopard. So, if they don't recommend installing Leopard myself, then that would be another reason not to order.

Enough rambling, for anybody who has already researched such things, can I build a machine with these components for $399 or less? I have built a few machines before so it is within my skill level, I guess I just want to know whether or not Psystar turns out to be legit, if building one for myself would cost even less.

Well you have to configure the dell to include the hi res led screen, vista full version, bluetooth and a 2.4 ghz processor. Otherwize the comparison aint fair. It´s possible to do I just did.

I agree - the US and UK are different - its difficult to get exactly the same spec in the UK.

I just looked at Mac Pro here £1,800 (with the 8800GT) - and configuring up a Dell Precision T7400 with dual Xeons and the price is remarkably (to me) similar.

I'll have to adjust my ideas, I think, in light of this evidence.

In US $4,000 for the Dell and only $3,000 for the Apple Mac Pro- I don't know how the graphics cards compare.

Wow! (embarassed)

Google OSx86 Project...

It's nice to see all the people that go for Psystar. I guess you never will run a successful business like Apple. lol

i've just noticed something (or it maybe nothing), on the video the ubuntu and the XP machines clearly show cables going for the screen into the tower, however the Mac tower doesn't appear to have any cables going to or from it:confused::confused::confused:

a mac pro underneath the desk???

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread, but has there been any confirmation anywhere that they've actually shipped any of these?

We'll see

I guess nobody here have ordered or received one of the Psystar systems?

It sounds like MacWorld has ordered one and will report on it when they receive and test it. Pretty good article on building a clone as well.

Gizmodo just posted a video of a reader who actually received their OpenComputer and is running leopard on it, take a look: http://gizmodo.com/384526/exclusive-video-psystar-in-the-wild

OK, so they shipped at least one. It appears to be functional, with the exception of system updates (let's hope there is a way around that). Begun, the Clone Wars have....

Since I don't see a lot of value in the support offered by Psystar, I think it would make more sense for a techie like me to build my own OSX86 box. Either that, or I'll just continue to buy last year's model of Mac Mini every year or so until I have a more compelling option from Apple. Steve, are you out there?

If you are savvy enough to know that you can have OS X on a white box PC, then you are savvy enough to know that it doesn't cost $400 to do so.

Honestly, OSx86 is what turned me on to Macintosh computers in the first place. I don't think that if I hadn't read a few Wiki pages and tried to build one myself (and miserably fail :p) I wouldn't have gone to the Apple store and bought my Macbook.

I think the os x 86 project is a good thing, if its being practiced legally.

I wish people would stop saying that Macs are more expensive. Their not. Priced spec for spec with Windows PC's they are usually around the same price if not cheaper.

Nope, you're wrong. But Macs do look cool and I love the OS. I just hope that Apple will hit us with a Windows version of iWorks. Now is the time to do it, because virtually everyone hates Office 2007!

Someone mentioned it:
http://www.maccast.com/2008/04/25/analysis-of-psystars-open-computer-video/

Also, before people has gotten their hackintosh with pirated software (EFI emulator author did not provide Psystar license to include or sell EFI emulator), no support (from either psystar), somehow some "customers" has already rated the product 4.5 stars, when the store isn't even open due to credit card problems.

What shady practices.
