Canadian cell phone plans have historically been very expensive compared to other countries, so we want to highlight a really good deal that has popped up.

Public-Mobile.jpg

In Canada, the carrier Public Mobile has launched a limited-time flash sale that offers 50% off its 5G Canada — U.S. — Mexico plans for a two-year period.

Here are the discounted plans available to new customers through January 26, with each also including unlimited calling and text messaging:
  • 60GB of 5G data for $20 per month (regularly $40 per month)
  • 80GB of 5G data for $25 per month (regularly $50 per month)
  • 100GB of 5G data for $30 per month (regularly $60 per month)
Public Mobile says these discounted plans are available for new activations only, and the promotion will expire 24 months after it is applied. Existing customers were briefly able to switch to a 100GB plan for just $20 per month (down from $40 per month) in the Public Mobile app, but this is no longer possible as of writing.

You can use your allotted data while roaming in the U.S. and Mexico at no additional cost, but note that Public Mobile limits 5G speeds to up to 250 Mbps. And after the allotted amount, data speeds are reduced to a maximum of just 512 Kbps.

Public Mobile is a prepaid carrier, meaning that you pay upfront for your monthly plan, with no credit check required. You can cancel your subscription at any time.

As a Telus subsidiary, Public Mobile uses the Telus network in Canada. However, Public Mobile customers may be deprioritized in busy areas if necessary, and cellular coverage can vary based on your location. All in all, service might not always be comparable to a major carrier like Bell or Rogers, but your mileage may vary.

Update: Existing customers were briefly able to switch to a 100GB plan for just $20 per month (down from $40 per month), but this is no longer possible. Still, the 60GB for $20 per month offer for new customers is a great deal by Canadian standards.

Seems like a great deal, particularly for Canada.
Yes! This article is not an ad or a referral/affiliate push or anything like that. I simply live in Canada and thought this is an unbelievably good deal, that I took out my Mac and wrote about it tonight. Cell phone plans have historically been very expensive in Canada. 100GB of data for $20/month is an incredible deal here, especially considering that U.S. and Mexico roaming is included at no extra cost.

EDIT: Unfortunately, the $20/month promo on the 100GB plan for existing customers disappeared already 😵

The good news is that even 60GB for $20/month is an unbelievably good deal in Canada, for new customers.

Existing customers can always port their number out to Fizz Mobile or Lucky Mobile and then port it back to Public Mobile under a new account (new email address). That takes a little bit of effort, but it's worth the hundreds of dollars of savings over the 2-year promo period.

Telus is one of the big telcos responsible for keeping prices high in Canada. Another interpretation of this deal is that they are trying to wrest consumers away from smaller independents in order to drive them out of business. I wouldn't touch this, or any similar deal from Rogers and Bell affiliates, with a ten-foot pole.

Wow, Canada is actually quite pricey for this stuff compared to the UK. Is this including tax? Even if it’s with it, here you can get SIM only deals for £20 per month with unlimited data (which is great because I go through a few hundred gigs each month), whether for a router or phone use. That’s about CAD$40, right?

Apart from 3, unlimited data is usually limited to 500-650gb in the UK.

(The UK phone regulator ok’d limiting unlimited data under the term fair use policy)

I’m on Smarty, which uses the same infrastructure by virtue of both being owned by the same company. No automatic annual rise in costs and it’s a rolling monthly contract, so should my circumstances change…

Well not bad, price only matters.
Public offers even in 🇨🇦 are better than in my country. I can not verify the deals from 🇨🇭 nor 🇮🇹. You guys say you got them, ok. They are awesome.

Speaking about major players on domestic market, in my country 99.2% of market are are three providers. With respective provider oriented pricing. USD 20$ esim for Apple Watch tariff per month, means I will not buy Apple Watch. Unless I say I quit I will not get slightly better price. Non public tariffs for company employees will get everyone to a level arround 20Gb data unlimited calls/texts USD 6-10$. Arround means that at this price there is such unofficial offer. This is not case when employer gives you company phone for free. Thats another level.
Slightly better than those three major players are official offers from global provides like Nomad, Airalo, Saily, Holafly etc..
So what I have is the cheapest offer from one of the big three with mobile data from cheapest global provider. Yes and I pay and pay and pay. The big three will get their share but not 100%
What I mean is if you can, do not feed the biggest players.

Edit: funny enough is global esim owned by one of the big three

I pay $5/month for unlimited data and communications!

You can get a $10 usd / month plan in Mexico that will cover Canada & the US data, text and calls. I wonder if a Canadian or American would be better off by buying one plan in Mexico or how would it look like if North America would actually be a single market like the European common market.

I was with Public Mobile for a bit, but now I’m using Freedom. Public Mobile has a few drawbacks. No wifi calling and no cellular Apple Watch support being the two big ones for me. I needed a carrier that supported Apple Watches for my kids.

Yes, Canadians get hosed. Everything is more expensive here and telecom has a "polopoly" (a monopoly amongst multiple companies). If there is an upcoming telecom company that is competitive, they inevitably get bought out. Telecom pretty much has us by the short and curlies.

I have Public Mobile as my Secondary line (eSIM), with TELUS as my Primary.

Public Mobile is a TELUS reseller, so piggybacks the same network, but, sadly, the network coverage is not as good (here on Vancouver Island). I found that surprising, so I haven't been willing to make them my Primary line.

I use the 60GB data bucket from my secondary line as my primary data, with fallback to primary, and that works well.

I do receive the occasional promotional offer from Public Mobile, such as TELUS Fiber Internet for $80/month (down from $125).

Tax (of up to 13% in Canada) is almost always on top of reported prices.

Those reporting Unlimited data, doesn't that's usually come with degraded speeds after "reasonable" data usage in a given month?
