Yeah, I agree about the stress test. I just don't think it is worth it. I have apple care, if something goes wrong I can take it to my local apple store and pitch a fit :D . Now time to wait to see if I get a great refurbished macbook pro or am one of the unlucky few who get the crappy ones. I am counting on a good-one!

If you have AppleCare you will be fine.

My 17" 2.6ghz is one day old and I have three years of AppleCare to cover it. Since I will be selling it in two years, nine months, I am not worried at all.

Smart to buck up for AppleCare -- I know the Pain: my system, with applecare and the upgraded processor (2.6), RAM (4 gig -- from Kingston, not Apple), 17" High Res Screen, and Applecare cost me $3450 -- WOW! And that was with a student discount and sales tax exemption. Ouch.

But it is the best Mac I have ever owned, even better than my very well built Quad G5, which, in itself is one bad moo fooo.

This is true, as well, but how much worse will Wi-Fi reception be? I mean, last time I used a MacBook Pro, it was able to pick up all the same networks that my MacBook could, so is aluminum really as bad as they say?

My new Aluminum 17" 2.6, high res, has perfect WiFi Strength and Reception in my office and in my client's office.

How good is $150 for 4 gig of crucial ram (and how is the quality of that Ram)? Should I wait for after christmas to see if they drop it again?

You can get excellent 4gb RAM on Newegg for under $100. You can even read the reviews, and see several posters describing how they worked in their MBPs/other Apple gear. Seriously - if you're in the US, prices for this kind of stuff don't get better than Newegg.

I've been lurking these forums for a while now and have been researching the MBP. I finally decided to join tonight. And I'm planning on getting a refurbished MBP for $2099 which isnt a bad deal to me. But im wondering to get the glossy screen or regular screen. What's the difference between the two? And those who have received there refurbished MBP, were they in perfect condition? I dont want to order one thats all beat up. I plan on ordering it tomorrow.

Well, I've decided not to wait. I'm going to order the top-of-the-line "Blackbook" tomorrow morning. I just don't see the point waiting another month for what may not even turn out to be true.

The glossy is more vivid in color, but reflects light sources. The matte is less vivid in color, but scatters light sources.

A refurbished Apple is statistically more likely to work than a brand new Apple.

I will tell you all how my macbook pro looks when it comes in. However, I have had 4 online apple reps and a phone rep tell me that it should look as new and the phone rep told me if it didn't to call them right away, so I am pretty sure it should be in great shape. As for ram, I am still looking around.

Yeah, forget it, I'll just grab my Macbook for Christmas and be happy with the thing.

I just bought my first Mac system, noted in my signature, last week from the Apple refurb store, which saved me 22% off the retail full price. I know it'll be upgraded or whatever in two months but for my purposes it'll be just fine.

Going from web development on a PC to my new Mac has been speeding my work a good deal. I couldn't be happier. :D

refurbs are great... better than new, dont fret on this

Just ordered my MBP w/ the neoprene sleve & a free printer due to rebate. :D
Cannot wait to get mine! Hopefully everything will be perfect.

I got the neoprene case too. It seems to be the most popular case for the macbook pro. Did you get Apple care? (deff. worth it if you didn't, and I highly suggest it). Any other advice guys. I really am looking at programs to download.

I am bulding a list of things to do christmas morning (sad I know, but i want this puppy to last me for 2 1/2 to 3 years)

If you guys have any suggestions, send it my way.

I didnt, unfortunately I cannot afford it at this time. :(
But I hope it was last me that long maybe even longer.
I also ordered the iLap.

you can still get it. I think there is like a couple months (maybe even a year) long window for you to purchase. Look online and start saving, it is really worth it!

How do i stop yes> dev\null\ after I start it. If it overheats and messes up my computer, am I liable? How big of an issue is the thermal paste? Why do I need to heat up the graphics card? Doesn't intensive heat mess up my battery?

As for waiting, I was so sure I was going to but with all this crud being about the 13.3 inch aluminum powerbooks, I knew what i wanted was the 15 so if all the attention they are getting is a penryn speed bump, why wait? Also, i won't come back in January winning about upgrades, yes it is inevitable. So is montenieva, 3-dimensional computing, and holographics, but you don't see me waiting for those either now do you? :D

P.S. December 25th Can't come fast enough. I wish I had Time Machine now? (and when do you think Apple will add the feature for time machine where I can go into the FUTURE and get documents. Like that research paper I don't want to write but will have in the future? :D)

Made me laugh. :D

That aside, I wouldn't 'stress test' your machine. If it is going to fail, it will do so under normal conditions so why push it? Also, check here for what software is good/necessary to have. You can also look here.

You can shut off /dev/null by pressing ctrl + c in the terminal or closing the terminal window.

I have worked in supporting and troubleshooting computer for quite some time now, so I am speaking from experience.

Stress testing your machine from day one is the best way to find out if something is wrong early. To hell with if you have Applecare.
The question comes down to if you want to lose all your data and your time spent setting up the machine after 6 months when you have filled the harddrive or do you want to find out if the machine is DOA within your 14 week return period when Apple can actually do something about?

Also, your machine will not necessarily fail under 'normal' conditions. This is not a car, this is a piece of electronics. If things work, they work, if they don't, it doesn't necessarily show until much later. With mechanics on the other hand, problems occur when a single part isn't working right.

You choice.
