Was really going back and forth between the portability of the MBP and "cool" new features vs a late 2105 iMac. Just pulled the trigger (via Amazon for 1899) and bought the MK472LL/A 27-Inch Retina 5K Desktop (3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB DDR3, 1TB Fusion). I'll upgrade the memory myself to 32gb since it's SO much cheaper to do it with aftermarket RAM than Apple's options.

I would have missed a big screen. And I didn't want to "risk" the new one coming out and seeing a price bump (like the MBP) and not enough of a bump to warrant the extra spend. Also didn't want to risk stock being unavailable based on the specs I wanted when/if the new iMacs are announced.

Given I'm coming from a 2009 iMac 2.92 dual core with 4mb of RAM - I have no doubts this one will scream in comparison anyway
[doublepost=1478284261][/doublepost]Bummer I have a 3.3 8gb 2tb fusion with office 2016 and win10 on boot camp that is 6 months old at 1399 on EBay.

Finally got my iMac 27". OMG that screen is huge!! Please tell me I'll get used to it. It's super fast and flawless but my eyes are still adjusting to that massive display.

Literally just got mine a few hours ago and I am going through the same thing, haha. I do think that we'll adjust, though - I like that I'm going to be able to actually have two things open at a time without flipping back and forth between two windows (I'm coming from a 13" MBP).

I'm pretty happy with mine so far *_* Just looking at the ports on it makes me happy. I think this is going to last me a very long time - the guy in the store helping me said he's had his since 2009, which made me very happy to hear.

I ordered a 27" iMac mid tier with the 2TB Fusion drive yesterday morning. I was told that it would be delivered on Tuesday. This morning, I get a notification from Fed Ex that it was "on the truck" for delivery today. What a pleasant surprise! Had it delivered to work and wound up taking the afternoon off so I could go home and set it up.

Coming from a late 2009 mini that fell victim to a power surge, this machine is a huge leap forward. Loving the iMac!

Oh you'll get used to it! Just throw another 27" next to it! ;)

Congrats on the purchase. I decided to go for the same route. Ditch MacBook Pro w/TB and go with the 27iMac full loaded minus the memory (8GB) as it is cheaper to get the aftermarket.
A little concern on the aftermarket memory tho...I've heard stories where the aftermarket memory didn't provide the same speed as the Apple's.. need to do more research on this...

Congrats on your new iMac. Did the same last month, they are great machines.

I'd suggest looking at www.crucial.com.

Try connecting over Wi-Fi again but select the "Show password" field just to make sure you're entering the password correctly as the keyboard layout on a Mac is slightly different to a PC layout (e.g. # is displayed by pressing Alt + 3). Side note: There are other keyboards layout you can choose by going to :apple: > System Preferences.. > Keyboard > Input Sources. E.g., in the UK, some people choose "British - PC" as the input source so the ", @ and # characters are in the same place as non-Apple British layout keyboards.

bbnck, did you purchase your memory from www.crucial.com?
I've read some reviews from Amazon that their memory DID NOT run at 1866Mhz as advertised...they were locked in at 1600Mhz. Do you know what brand is the Apple memory/RAM? Is it their own brand??

Make sure you buy from a reputable brand, and if on Amazon, from Amazon rather than a third party seller so you get their customer service and return policies. Mostly I think you'll just run into mis-labeled RAM since it all looks similar, so be sure the specs are correct and you should be fine. I've never personally ran into this problem in the last 20 years, but I suppose mislabeled and counterfeit sticks can exist. Especially from small third party sellers on Amazon where you can list anything you want as a marketplace seller.

This time I went with OWC's 16GB kit. But Crucial, or Trans International are good brands as well.

I'm probably going with OWC... I've heard good things

Do you not find the second display less sharp? I'm dreading going back to my 27" Dell after working on my partner's new 27" iMac :D same resolution but only 1/4 of the number of pixels

It's less sharp, but it's still a kick butt display, in my opinion. I mostly use it strictly for video preview so I don't notice anyway. I have mine hardware calibrated so color difference is less noticeable but still present.

Yeah, I do the same with my MacBook Pro and Dell 27". I just calibrated my partner's new imac (she's a graphic designer) but there wasn't much difference between calibrated and uncalibrated.

Hello guys,

I am thinking about same thing - buying the late 2015 5k iMac. I was waiting till the last event but I was disappointed because no update for iMac also higher prices for MBP and also only USB-C ports so it seems that MBP is not an option for me now and for almost same price I can get stunning 5k display. I don't need a portable device - I have Dell from my employer. I am considering the middle version of iMac (3,2GHz i5, 1TB Fusion Drive, M390), but I still don't know if it is worth to buy one year old HW. I mean I know it has enough power hopefully for next couple of years. I would like to have that machine at least for 6 years. Currently still using first unibody MBP (late 2008, 15" screen, 8GB, 256 GB SSD) and it is already little bit slow but usable. Anyway I think it is time for upgrade.

What I use the machine for:
  • RAW files processing (Lightroom)
  • processing of HD and 2K movies (iMovie)
  • occasionally web development
  • office work & internet

So still don't know if I should buy one year old HW or wait to March if there will the iMac refresh but I am a little bit scared what they can do with it (price increase, only USB-C ports, ???? )

Tough call for me :) How do you see it?

I have purchased in the past from OWC. The customer service is very good. The prices are also good.
[doublepost=1478461806][/doublepost]
I went with the higher speed memory as discussed on this forum.

Kingston 8 GB 2133 MHz DDR3L CL11 1.35 V HyperX Impact SODIMM Memory Module - Black

Why did you choose the 2133MHz over the 1866Mhz?

Availability, price (£35/stick) and same CL at top speed or better CL at 1866MHz

Customer service is the main reason I stick with them. Also maybe a bit biased due to past experience: back in the early 00s when my PowerMac 8600 mobo died, the only RAM that still worked afterwards was the OWC and Apple RAM. Kingston sticks all died.

I opted for the top version in my signature, got it about 3 months ago, and it has been fantastic. When you need a new machine you need a new machine, there is no point in waiting for a marginal increase in performance, it already has Skylake CPU. If you need a new machine, just get it. Whichever you chose, just DO NOT get the 1TB fusion drive, upgrade to 2TB at least, as it has 128GB SSD vs just 24GB SSD on the 1TB.
Edit: and as other have said - you can get a 16GB upgrade from 3rd party, I got 2x4GB modules from Crucial, no issues what so ever.

Thanks bbnk for the great info and suggestions. With all this great help I hope to someday be a genius.....OK, I'll settle for less dumb.

I finally got the wifi connection to work for the new iMac. It was crazy. Nothing I tried worked until I took one of my iPads, disconnected it from the wifi ("forget network") and then tried the new iMac. The iMac then connected. I was able to reconnect the iPad.....and now everything works. I don't know why this worked, but it did. Kinda like the iPad was in the way.

I would check your router to see if DHCP has any available IPs left. My guess is that your router is setup with just very few IPs and that if why removing one allowed you to connect a different device.

Yes, I have similar way of thinking (get the new machine whenever you need it) but there is always some "but" :) Considering also the upgrade to 2TB fusion drive but then it is slightly more expensive than top version so it is better to get the best one and I would get also better GPU and little bit faster CPU.

Need to think more and go to try the machine.

By the way, Does anybody have the new magic trackpad together with iMac? Thinking about buying it as well. I am used to trackpad from MBP and it is really great. Might be beneficial to have it also on desktop.

I've got one - I have a mouse on the left and the trackpad on the right. I'm left handed and use my mouse for most things but the trackpad is brilliant for gestures such as switching between full screen apps, navigating pages, etc

I had one of the original trackpads but when I got my new iMac with the new keyboard and mouse it bugged me that it didn't match so I stumped up for the new Magic Trackpad.

I'm glad I did as the extra size makes it even more useful and it now matches really well with the rest of my iMac. I hardly ever use the force touch gestures though

The other advantage of the better GPU is that it runs cooler (m390 or m395). When I purchased my refurb'd 27" iMac about 2 weeks ago I ordered the magic trackpad 2. I really like the it has force touch like my 2015 MabckBook Pro.

I'm so glad I found this forum because I plan to buy a 27" iMac this week. Was looking at a 2015 MBP but I honestly dont utilize the mobility any more and every time Im in the store I levitate towards the 5K display. My question is in regards to the HD. Right now I plan on getting a refurb with 1TB Fusion however I was displeased to hear Apple started their current trend of stingy options last year with the paltry 24GB flash. I honestly do not have enough media to justify a 2TB hard drive and seem to already be spending an arm and a leg for a computer, granted a seemingly good one at that. Does anyone know if the 128GB vs 24GB makes that much of a difference in comparison. I.e. will you ever notice that much of a lag that you wish you had spent the extra $200?

It's a big difference. I've used both pretty extensively.

24gb of flash is basically the same as no flash at all. I mean we're talking about a really puny amount

The 2 tb fusion is waayy better and easily worth whatever the extra cost is. Though I've used that too and let me tell you, it still isn't as fast as pure SSD.

Pure SSD is the fastest and in my opinion the best option. I sprung for the 512 and it's providing the fastest computing experience I've ever had. Even the 256 gb still delivers amazing speeds.
