Hi, I am going to buy my first Mac Computer and I have decided to go with a new 2009 Unibody MBP. This is going to mostly stay on my desk at home but I will be taking it around to places I need it so thats why i went with the MBP instead of a MacPro.
Anyways i was wondering if you guys think i should go with the 17 inch or the 15 inch. I have heard things about the 17 inch like its too heavy and its very cumbersome.

    Whats your opinion?

I am the new owner of a 17 inch MBP, and I can say with certainty that it is neither heavy nor cumbersome. The weight is well distributed, and it doesn't feel all that much heavier than my 15 inch MBP (aluminum version). It's one pound heavier, to be precise.

Well, what matters is more your own opinion. ;)

One person in another recent thread was in a similar situation and ended up getting a 13" MBP but later regretted it, wishing he had gotten the 15" and found the 17" to be too big for his tastes.

I've got a 17" but only because it was the only thing that met my computing requirements. I do wish I was able to take advantage of a 13" or 15" laptop since even an extra pound or pound-and-half feels noticeably heavier when lugging it around all day while travelling. (I'm on my 10th or so laptop over the last 15 years.)

Still, why not drop by an Apple Store and hold/lift a 15" and 17" MBP and see which you think is comfortable for you. You might find one or the other is too limiting for your needs, making the other to be a better fit.

I'd pretty much agree with electroshock, here. Personally, I'd find the 17" a hit heavy and cumbersome to lug around all day; granted, the screen is spectacular, and, as a portable computer that spends most of its time on a desk, I doubt it could be bettered.

My preference is the 15" MBP (which I have) and I finds it the best trade-off between power, portability and an excellent screen. However, it's your call, and only you can say which one suits your own needs best. Go to an Apple store and heft each of them, which should give you an idea of which of them you might prefer.

    Cheers and good luck

Do you have an Apple store near you? Or an authorised reseller? It would be best to see the machines in person to help you make a better decision. Try picking them up and seeing which you'd be best with. Your going to be spending a lot of money so its best that you get it right first time :)

Thanks everyone for their help. I went in to my local apple store and compared the two and I decided on the 15 inch MBP. I figured I might eventually want that portability.
