Purchase iMac 20 or 24?

I'm ordering an iMac early next week and am trying to decide which one to purchase.

I can purchase the the 2008 2.4 Imac 20" with the 2400 XT, 250GB HD for $1144 after the rebate, but I'd have to spend another $50 for a RAM upgrade.

I can also purchase the 2007 2.4 Imac 24" with the 2600 Pro, 320GB HD for $1399 and I wouldn't need the RAM upgrade.

Eventually I'd max the RAM in either unit.

Is it better to go with the new generation model or is larger screen size worth it for about $200 more?

It's going to be primarily used by my wife for general computing and kids for educational (non-3D) games.

I have the 20" version,and it suits my needs. I use it for surfing my favourite sites,as well using iPhoto & iDVD for packaging and burning dvd's of still photo's.

24" definitely, you wont regret it.

However, this is a personal decision that only you can make. The reason I vote for the 24" is the great display and the fact is simply is better than the 20". the 24" is 8 bit, the 20" is 6 bit.
I do like my 24"!

Also, with how OS X uses floating windows, I find larger displays work better. I have the 24" iMac and I am moving to a MBP with a 30" display (adding a Mac Pro later).

Why are you moving to a MBP which is inferior to the iMac (if you got the latest)?

In addition to the iMac I'm pruchasing next week, I'm also planning to purchase a MBP for myself once they are updated.

It really depends on the amount of space you have for the iMac. I personally went with the maxed out 20" because I didn't have room for a 24". If you have the space for the 24" go for it. The 24" has a better display, bigger HDD and a better GPU. But remember they look a lot smaller at the apple store than they do in a smaller space like your home office, or family room. Enjoy your new mac!
