Okay. I feel I must speak out for poor FS. Even though I'm the OP that threw them under the bus at the front end of this thread!

Despite my feelings, communicated here, about my recent experience at Future Shop I have nothing but appreciation for the existence of the company.

Future Shop was the very first "big" electronics retailer in Canada. They opened the door for Best Buy and forced downward pressure on electronics prices from coast to coast. I have spent a lot of money in Future Shop over the years and I did so because it was convenient, they had what I wanted and the price was right.

We should all be happy that FS's margins are so tight that they have to rely on extended warranties to boost their profit margins to be able to cover their expenses. All we have to do is smile...and say "No thank you."

I will continue to shop at Future Shop despite this experience.

Darren

Haven't done much shopping at Best Buy have you? ;)

Best Buy is probably the worst consumer electronics store when it comes to... well, everything.

Oh and their selection of products is a joke too. I laugh every time I see their headphone selection.

I hate BestBuy myself.. Absolute dreck of a store with some serious problems as far as customer service goes..BUT, I have to say that the store in Mt. Laurel NJ actually has a very knowledgeable, and eager to please employee in the Apple section inside the store.. The guy really enjoys what he does, and has a passion for Apple, the company, as well as the products..

I have 2 Apple stores within 20 minutes of my house and I may actually consider going here because the Apple stores are always so busy, and truthfully, this guy seemed to have more passion for what he was doing than any of the Apple store employees I've dealt with at my local stores over the years.. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the Apple stores- I like them, I've had pretty good experiences there- but talking to this Apple employee in BestBuy was like talking to everyone in here.. I was shocked, and wouldn't mind helping the guy make a go of it, in some small way if I could..

hey
i hear u bud
me, as an ex future shop computer sales person i will tell u something

1. future shop makes pennies off of laptops, but the sales ppl who r on commission (black shirts, or product experts) make money off of the Product Service plan. NUMBER ONE BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY IN THE WORLD!!!
2. future shop has no desire of pleasing a customer long term as apple does
the please u for the time ur in there to get u to buy **** and thats it! they made money their happy, u got a product u think works 100% ur happy

always always buy your computers if u want an apple in my opinion from apple directly unless u r in dire need of one, then last resort to such places

trust me, i was once them!

dude i work for Best BUy, i know it in and out. The service is worth it, if you look at the avarage repair cost, its crazy, esspecially for apple. For the last ****ing tim, it is not the same company, it is the same OWNER read it O_W_N_E_R!!! THe policies and the works are far different. Our job (best Buy) is to show the benefit of PSP over manifacturer and just educate them on what it offeres. Its their descision to get it or not in the end, we are not going to beg them to buy it! We preform well based on the principal of descision. WE tell them what it does and in the end it up to them to see if it is worth it. So read up on the differences waht best buy made to retail such as eliminating mail in rebate crap and one and a half percent of total revenue gets donated to childrens foundation! Just telling, although i am leaving them for marketing, i am pround of the company and i do respect what they have done to the retail world to change the standard of retail store, tehre is more to mention but i am to lazy :D

just never buy a bestbuy or fs warntee they dont do anything my friends ipod broke and they did **** to help them so he bought a warntee from best buy for nothing

pffft
u **** at bestbuy don't make any personal profit via the psp or any product
base bay is what u get
sure ur store numbers increase
but thats all

u seem to be proud to work there and thats good, but just what best buy and futureshop stand behind

sure i bought my laptop from there, but didn't fall for any other services!

My understanding is that the Apple reps are not best Buy employees, but are Apple employees, or subcontractors paid by Apple in some respect. Hence the difference in service level.

Other than this, I do have to agree with the other critics of Best Buy here. They used to be halfway decent, but have gone downhill ever since they've driven most of their competitors (i.e. CompUSA) out of business. They are the category killer, they fully realize it, and no longer care if you're satisfied or not, because it's forgone conclusion that if you want something right away, you have to buy it there, or at circuit city (which is only marginally better, if at all).

That said, Best Buy and FS are probably the only real choice for Apple to easily expand their retail presence way beyond the Apple stores, which aren't nearly as numerous. They also did right to not trust the standard-issue Best Buy sales drones to properly sell Apple, and put dedicated Apple reps in there. I've seen Best Buy reps sell overpriced Sony Vaio laptops are incorrectly trash other comparable (and less expensive) models from other brands. I can only imagine the disinformation they'd spew about Macs.

I can't trust FS with any computer purchases.

Last time I bought a Windows Laptop (yeah, I know), the sales man almost begged me to buy a warranty. I refused, but he did not give up. He was talking for almost 50 minutes that it would costs tons of money to fix something that would break.

Then, he took the box of the laptop into their futureshop staff room, and did something with it. What the sales man did was take out the laptop out of its box, and repeatably hit the battery on a metal surface (as it appears). I did not know this at the time, so I ended up buying the laptop without the warranty. Then I came home, and saw scratches on the battery, and that the packaging was obviously opened.

I will never buy from FS again.

Brick and mortar stores have overhead to deal with. Until the day the government figures out a way of taxing me for internet purchases, I'll continue to buy my computer stuff from Amazon.com. Free shipping and no tax and a very good return policy. And, I don't burn any gasoline getting there.

I guess I have the ability to wait 3-5 days for something to get to me. Especially when I'm saving 8.25% (local tax rate here in TX) and the 40+ dollar typical shipping charges.

the idea of a commission based salesperson is so that the salesperson will be motivated to sell and give you the best service possible, so that the customer will come back not once, not twice, but everytime they need help. that way, the commission keeps on coming, does it not?

in the case of an average best buy associate, it REALLY doesn't matter if their customers go back, or go back to them (let's be realistic, even if bb or fs loses
a customer or two, they're not going to go bankrupt) They still get paid the same way, regardless of whether or not they have customers for life.

However, what bestbuy provides is a comfortable shopping place. They emphasize that they are not on commission so they let you be so like most of the guys in here, they usually know their stuff so they just wanna go and check out prices and see whats new.

lemme ask you this: who will be more eager to provide you with information, a guy who only gets paid if you buy FROM him, or a guy who gets paid whether you enter the store or not?

futureshop associates not only have to give u a good impression of the store, they have to give you a good impression of themselves, or else even though i am buying from fs, i don't have to buy from the associate.

That is the IDEA of a fs salesperson. That being said, it often results in way too pushy salespeople, and people who want to slap a sticker on for a quick buck. that's also realistic. but if an associate is there for a career and not a summertime college student, they would think longer term and hopefully provide better service...it would prove better for themselves (if not you) in the long run.

and this is all without saying that some people who work actually CARE for their customers.

in the case of applecare vs psp

psp (bb and fs are the same) has power surge protection, performance guarantee, and replacement guarantee.

power surge = "act of god", surge zaps your macbook
performance = your macbook isn't broken, but it simply doesnt' run as well as it used to. IE - constant lagging, reaction time between typing the letter k and it hitting on screen, noises
replacement / no lemon guarantee: if either it takes longer than 90 days for them to fix your laptop, or the cost to fix your laptop is over 80% of the cost of the unit, they will give you a new unit (matching its specs 2 spec) OR if takes more than 3 major repairs.

i'd say those are the major differences. i'm not sure if applecare has their own version of the performance, but i know sure they dont' cover power surge.

at the expense of sounding like a desperate salesperson trying to make internet sales or something, i would say, like most things, do your research and make the wise choice depending on if you think its worth the money or not.

of course, in the OP 's case, you woulda saved yourself some money on the psp it seems if you had purchased it then.

myself, i didn't have the luxary of buying psp at the time and when it came down to buying applecare, i decided not to spend the 300 bucks becuase its very hard to spend 300 bucks on "nothing" after using it for a year already.

current problems i have with my powerbook that has me slamming my head against the wall:

cd player keep skipping and is REALLY REALLY LOUD
putting a cd in makes my entire computer freeze at times
my battery only charges up to 43 percent (battery is not covered in either of their warranties)
my charger broke. i bought an aftermarket mcCally for 40 bucks. ripoff. (85 for the OEM one)
wifi reception is in consistent
bluetooth is inconsistent.

and one more thing, a month after i hada bought the powerbook, my wifi died. after the mac guy inspected it several times, he had to order a new motherboard. computer geniuses on here can prolly tell you how much one of those guys cost.

with the exception of the battery, all of those things would be covered under either of the warranties, i believe. i'm saliving over that black macbook, but i dont' want to throw out the coin for it....a replacement plan sure would be nice right now.

i've had the pb since jan 05. just a little over 2 years.

that's my take. good luck to you either way.

ps- no, i do not actually sell computers for futureshop.

I love Best Buy for the most part. That being said,, in reference to the post above describing commission sales, here's my take on that.

I've been in some sort of sales for 20 years now. I've trained a lot of sales guys that want the jobs that pay 150-200K a year. There are really three basic rules to sales that will enable anyone to elevate up over the typical chimp-level salesperson...

1. Do what you say you're going to do and when you say you're going to do it.

2. Don't lie to anyone for any reason.

3. Always do what's in your customers best interest at all times. Even if that means not making the sale.

Pretty damn simple to be frank. I've never been to this FutureShop place, but if they abide by these three rules, I'm betting they never get mentioned here.

3. Always do what's in your customers best interest at all times. Even if that means not making the sale.

i fullheartedly agree.

but unfortunately, not everybody WANTS to be an "above chimp level" salesperon, they just want money :(

I have never purchased an extended warranty at BestBuy for any computer or electronics ever. I have never needed warranty work on computers to begin with in 15+ years of using them.

I purchases two of my Macs at BestBuy. The last was my iMac. Both the Apple rep and the guy who rang up my sale tried to sell me the warranty and I refused. My MacBook was purchased online at the Apple store and I didn't get Apple Care with that either. Both of my iPods are still working as well, the first was purchased in 2004 at CircuitCity, no warranty on those either.

I just bought a Macbook Pro today at BB and the experience was good. I got what I needed, I wasn't pushed into the warrenty (he mentioned it once and that was it) and the guy I was speaking to was actually helpful....

Crazy huh?

The Apple reps are always very helpful and knowledgeable. In a month or two, I will be ordering another MacBook and I will only have to decide on if I want it overnighted from Apple or buy it from BestBuy. Tough decisions eh? :)

Future Shop salesmen make 12% commission on PSP...that's why he was so insistent. Yes, 12%.

If you don't want it when they offer it, best just to say no thank you firmly and that SHOULD be the end of it :p

While I haven't purchased a computer from Best Buy since 1999 and I don't really have anything against them, I will make one comment. At least at the stores in the Detroit area, their staff has been significantly depleted. I remember going into one and having several employees ask if I needed assistance. In the last few years, I've gone there to make major purchases: television, refridgerator and stove, small fridge and small television for work, car radio and another television for a gift - five seperate trips. Each time I had a heck of a time tracking someone down. And each time, I was not the only person waiting for help either.

I went to FS yesterday to look at the tiny mac section as I am getting ready to purchase my first mac. I am deciding between the black and white macbook. FS didn't even have the blackbook on display so I couldn't get a nice look/feel of it (I wasn't near an Apple store or I would have gone).

The other thing is that I was looking for discoloration on the whitebook to see if it was still a factor, indeed it is but I guess thousands of people come in and touch it with their dirty hands. I was going to get a wireless keyboard to minimize my use of the actual macbook when at home but noticed the keys on the keyboard of the iMac had been more discolored than the macbook. It was quite discouraging.

Alas, its FS!

Honestly - don't worry about the discoloration thing. I work at a big box store and obviously if you have a white macbook, which attracts WAY more attention than the other laptops due to its coolness, it will get filthy. We have 2 macbooks in the family that are heavily used but the users normally have pretty clean hands and so the 2 macbooks look great and aren't stained at all. Trust me on this one...if you take care of the laptop, it won't get gross - same goes for anything, I guess.

new york retail store MBP price and options

I'm looking for the cheapest retail store to buy a standard macbook pro.
Any chance I will get a better deal at Best Buy then at an Apple store?

As I'll be visiting New York only for a few days (I live in Brussels) I won't be able to make use of macmall or their rebate programs. Anybody managed to get the Apple store or BestBuy to throw in some free extra RAM or something after mentioning the Macmall prices?

Lastly, do the apple store and/or Best Buy stores in New York in your experience normally have configurations with the 7200 rpm drive option in stock? I guess not but that would be even sweeter! (the RAM I can always add later)

Thanks in advance to help me save a few euros and help New York make a few more bucks!;)

BestBuy will have exactly the same prices as the Apple store does.

The Apple computers that BestBuy does sell are going to be the same models the website says they have so none of them will have 7200RPM hard drives and nothing extra will be added. I don't think an Apple store would have any ready to sell either, it's an item that needs to be custom ordered.

Thanks hexonxonx!
I'll push my luck in the apple store then. Worst case, I end up with a new MBP 2.4Ghz with a 5400 rpm drive...
Still a small improvement over my current ibook G3 600mhz, I'd say! :D:D:D

Unless the dollar continues to bounce back as it did in the last two days, in which case I may as well buy here in Brussels...

So I just picked a Macbook last week from Future Shop, thought I'd share my experience.

Overall it was a very POSITIVE one, I swindled some good deals and the sales person I dealt with was top notch.

I've heard the horror stories before, but I've bought some fairly large electronics from Future Shop, and have yet to run into any problems.

What I intended to purchase:

- White Macbook 2.4Ghz, 2 GB Memory, 160 GB drive
- 500 GB Western Digital Drive
- Dlink Xtreme N Wireless Router

From there I was going to buy the 4 GB RAM upgrade online for $130. I was also going to buy a cheap mini DVI-DVI adapter and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo.

I had initially informed the sales person of my intentions to purchase certain items elsewhere. He was understanding, and asked where I would be getting the RAM, and for how much. He said he would give me the 4GB upgrade for $100 (I think Future Shop retailed it for $130 or so per 2 GB stick, so it would have been $260 + for 4 GB) - I instantly took that deal.

From there I continued to ask him if he could give me a deal on anything else. I mentioned the DVI adapter from Apple was quite expensive, he suggested a cheaper version (I think it was $19). Again, appreciated the information and agreed to purchase.

While he was punching everything in the computer, I asked if he could throw in anything else to sweeten the deal. I knew from previous purchases that nearly everything in the store is negotiable (had bought a plasma and surround system last year).

So, he said he would punch everything in and see what he could do.

A couple minutes later he tells me that if I purchase the exact same Macbook setup, only an open-box (refurb) version, that he would gladly reduce the price and throw in a free 3-year service plan.

I took some time to review the offer before realizing that I could essentially commit high-way robbery.

I had him price everything out with my original products (and new, un-opened, Macbook). It came out to a couple hundred more than the open-box + 3 year service plan he had offered.

In the end I decided to go with the open-box + all other items mentioned.

Later that night I priced out what I would have spent buying all of the items, and the new Macbook without a service plan. It came out to around $2300 ish.

What I ended up paying for everything was somewhere in the ballpark of $2100, EXCEPT, I also got a 3 year service plan on the Macbook.

What I purchased:

- Open-box White Macbook 2.4Ghz, 2 GB Memory, 160 GB drive
- 500 GB Western Digital Drive
- Dlink Xtreme N Wireless Router
- Wireless keyboard/mouse combo
- Mini-DVI to DVI adapter

To me, that sounds like a phenomenal deal.

So, despite all the horror stories that may be out there, I had a relatively positive experience, as did my wallet.

Now, if anything goes wrong with my new toys - I may be writing an entirely different story.
